Slow internet

I'm running wirlessly on a Netgear C3000 2.4 Ghz modem/router but internet often seems to run and load slowly and very often disconnects without warning.  I've checked the storage capacity on my laptop and I have plenty of RAM and disk space.  Do I need to upgrade my modem and, if so, type and model?

    What is "very slow"? What does a speedtest show?  Also, what does the speedtest show if use a wired ethernet connection to the modem/router?  Last, when it cuts out, can you still see your wireless network? Can you still connect? Is the wireless strength low?
