Slow Internet speeds despite upgraded service

You would think after upgrading our service level to 150 Mbps we would have no issues with our internet.  The increased expenditure each month is likely making this situation even more frustrating.  I don't understand why we are resetting our router almost daily and huddling near the device to hope that this will help speed things up.  I have a brand new iPad and was very close to the router earlier today and it felt like I was on dial up.  I have ordered some wifi extenders to see if they will help but given my experience earlier, I'm afraid the issue is not entirely distance caused.  I am renting a Cox approved router DN3000D that is not very old, so I would hope this is sufficient to handle our needs.  I would love any recommendations that might help our situation....thank you.

I assume the DN3000D is Cox's number for the Netgear C3000Dv2 N450 gateway, a single band (2.4GHz) wireless n gateway. If so, you won't get anywhere near the 150Mbps you are paying for over WiFi. The best, under ideal conditions, is 40 to 50 Mbps. What speed are you getting?

A brand new iPad will support wireless ac on the 5GHz band. You need a gateway or router also supporting ac to get your WiFi speeds. You may still need an extender or two, depending on placement and size of your home, but everything must support 802.11ac. Please see this article on the real world speeds by WiFi standard.

  • Hi Allenboys,

Thanks for reaching out to us via the Forums! AllenP is correct; you won't see 150Mbps on a wireless connection. How many connected devices do you have in your home? (PCs, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, game systems, Smart TVs, etc.) It sounds like you might want to try a dual-band device, rather than the single-band DN3000D. Is your Gateway located high off the floor, in a central location of your home, away from other electronics that could cause WiFi interference?

Becky, don't forget, not only dual band but supporting the ac standard. You won't get 150Mbps with any wireless n device, dual band or not.

What modem are you using? I went online and ordered a new modem this week in hopes that it would help. I also subscribe to the 150mb plan but usually see more like 50mb if i'm lucky. A lot of times it hovers around 5-10mb until I reboot every other day and sometimes that doesn't fix it. Cox came out and ran a brand new line from the street to my house directly into the modem in hopes to fix this but it has not resolved my issue. What I ended up doing was over-spend on an expensive state of the art 32-channel modem to try and to speed this stuff up. From doing a bit research I discovered my 3-4 year old modem was only 8 downstream channel capable and cox provides up to I think 24 channels now? So I ordered an expensive 32 channel model to see if it helps. Having the full 24 channels to pick from will allow your modem to analyze and utilize the less traffic congested lines if i'm reading this right. We'll see if this actually has any affect or not though. ***After the other replies in this thread I guess I should add that I also just purchased the Netgear Nighthawk X4S Dual Band AC Router so that's definitely not my issue. And before that one I had the older Nighthawk R7000 Dual Band AC Router and was still seeing slow speeds with my PC connected directly to the router and any wireless device AC or not. Tons and tons of troubleshooting from cox with rep after rep coming to my house unable to resolve the issue.

Hello! I just wanted to report back to VERIFY that purchasing the brand new modem definitely solved my speed issues. I was maxing out around 50mb on average with a wired connection and 10-30mb over AC wireless. After installing my new modem about 20 minutes ago my wired speeds jumped to nearly 160mb and my wireless via AC / 5Ghz connections are seeing just over 100mb across two stories of the house through several walls. BEYOND HAPPY at this point!
