Setting up a pop3 email account on iPhone

I have a new iPhone and am trying to set up a pop3 email account.  I have one set up on my iPad but when I try to set one up on the iPhone it goes into 'Verifying' and continues there until finally getting a message saying it failed because the smtp server is not repsonding.  I believe I have used the same settings I uses for the iPad.

Is there anything I can do to get a pop3 account on my iPhone?
