Robocalls Request

There is a new service available to intercept and block robocalls. Several phone service providers now provide access to this service but Cox does not yet. I am requesting that such access be provided. The service is called "Nomorobo" and a brief description, as I understand it, is as follows. All incoming calls to my number are intercepted and routed to a different number where a sophisticated algorithm makes a very quick determination of the probability that it is a robocall. If the determination is that it is NOT a robocall, my phone is then allowed to ring and the delay is less than a second. If the determination is that it IS a robocall, then a voice requests the caller to press a particular key and, if there is a correct response, the call is allowed to proceed normally. My understanding is that the success rate of the algorithm is very good. Probably 90% of the calls I receive are robocalls, many of which are silent, and there is a GREAT need for a service of this kind.

    @ astronomer,

Thanks for sharing this information with us be more than happy to pass it on to our engineering team.

  • That's what the reply is to every single person complaining about nuisance call harassment... at this point it can be loosely translated to:  "Nothing is going to change... your choice is take it or leave it"

I, and many others, have been asking this very question for over 3 years.  Nomorobo is at least that old.  Cox's canned response is exactly the same empty response they have always given.  I, for one, have had enough.  I am shopping for alternatives to the Cox phone service as I write this.  Anyone out there have any recommendations for anyone but Cox?

Why offer a real solution when a pat answer is so much cheaper?  Digital phone is not a core service- so it's not likely that Cox is going to spend very much improving service or protecting its paying customers from the criminal violations of privacy.  The canned response indeed is the same one given to any suggestions concerning the industry-sanctioned but technically illegal telemarketing and robocalling harassment.

It makes little business sense to actually deal with the issue in a meaningful way when the annoyance is nothing more than a profit opportunity for service providers?

I was with Century Link and I am starting to wonder if I made a HUGE mistake changing to Cox. Century Link offers a telephone setting that clearly answers the phone and states that the resident does not accept solicitation calls and if you are not a solicitor, please press 1. I was able to eat my dinner without interruption. Even though I have blocked "private calls", they do not weed out the robocalls and solicitation calls that come from burn phones. I have put my number on the federal no call list, but that is useless.

If Century Link can offer this service free of charge, I see no reason for Cox not to do the same thing. If you want to live your life uninterrupted while making dinner, eating dinner, trying to watch your favorite tv show, then I recommend switching your phone service to Century Link.

We apologize that today we do not offer a feature like the one you have mentioned.  As nobody enjoys calls from these devices that are deployed today.  It has been submitted to our product design team numerous times.  As demand increases we have found that we normally will follow customers demand for products.  Therefore possibly one day we will be able inform customers that we have this feature.  We understand this does not help you today, but hopefully it will in the future.

  • No it may not be immediately helpful but I do appreciate the fact that this wasn't the usual formulaic pat answer.  It would be nice if "My Friend in the Digital AgeĀ®" would coordinate resources and efforts with law enforcement to find the criminals (the ones operating within US borders)... of course we'd need something beyond the placebo buttons offered by our "benevolent" overlords who pretend to be acting in our best interests.

You know the service is working on Cox Business Phone service.  Why not residential?

The switches uses for business services have the capabilities to support this, the residential equipment does not.

I've received over 30 calls in the last three days from a single "robocall" 855 number affiliated with the endless "Microsoft" scammers.  In order to get this specific caller blocked, Cox wants me to pay them an extra $2 month.  Sorry Cox, this is the tipping point for me and I'll now research all options to replace Cox completely.  I've been a loyal, fully bundled, on-time paying customer for 20+ years.  To ask me to pay an additional fee not to be harassed by over-seas criminals is unacceptable and short-sighted.
