Recording on external hard drive for viewing outside of home on Tablet

Hi, I don't' know if this can be done. I did a google search and nothing showed a current date or answer. My husband drives OTR and I got him a tablet to stream his Netflix and Amazon on but when he doesn't have a WiFi connection I wondered if I could put an external hard drive on the contour box via USB and record shows and then just have him take that hard drive when he leaves. Is this possible or would I need a scrambler or something. Not going to get one I just wonder if the format is u-viewable outside of the home and or the Cox box's.

    I think it will be encrypted

    Have you thought of ditching contour and switch to Tivo what you want to do would be easier
