Recent Email Outage

Hey Guys, Had to call in to find out what was doing with my email. Seems like everything is backed up as of 5:09 PM, December 8th and my email is loading ever so slowly! Might be nice to post something on your web page to let your clients know what's going on instead of leaving us in the DARK!

So what is going on?  All my services except IMAP email are working.  The email occasionally connects.  It started early 12/7/2016 and since then my several accounts have only succeeded sync on MS Office Professional 2010 about 2 or three times (in ~36 hours).  My phone (iPhone7) is working a little better, but still big delays.  This happened about 2 years ago when they first rolled out IMAP and failed to build out for the load.  It took them over 6 months to fix it that time.  Why am I not surprised?

All COX is saying about it at this point...

"We are currently experiencing intermittent problems affecting some customers' Email service. You may experience error messages when accessing, reading or retrieving email, or using other email features. You can access email via our Webmail service.

Due to high traffic, Webmail may be slower than usual. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resolve these issues as rapidly as possible.  Please continue to check this page for updates".

  • Hi Magua and Ex Admin, I apologize for the inconvenience. Are either of you still experiencing any issues with your email service? Outage information can be found online on the Cox website at www.cox.com You will need to login using your primary Cox user id and password.

@ MichaelJ  Could you comment on why Cox's POP3 and IMAP5 servers were taken off Cox's network and how that played a role in the outage? Looks like POP was put back this morning, but IMAP is still on Rackspace. I can include tracert if wanted, but I have a feeling you have more info on the issue then I do.

Yep. Cox definitely knows more than they're letting on. I noticed the same thing last night - that imap.cox.net was pointing to servers hosted at Rackspace. And now it's pointing to an IP address on Cox's network (68.6.19.24, to be specific). It definitely explains some of the connectivity issues. At one point, Cox's own DNS was still pointing to servers on their network while Google's DNS was pointing to Rackspace. What a mess.

Just piling on... talked to a tier 2 rep Thursday pm to answer questions on why IMAP service was not working on one account, but OK on another, and a third POP3 account was fine.  Rep explained that COX had executed a server shift which had unintended consequences and they "think they know what is causing in"  ... Told me to use webmail and the IMAP problem should be fixed in a "day or two. " Still having problems today (10 Dec).  Suggested that cox should be sending information to all IMAP customers of the outages and provide updates so we don't have to waste time attempting to access email.  Apparently cox prefers to keep its IMAP customers in the dark instead of keeping us informed of service outages.

p.s. this is why my kids use gmail.  Don't think they will be future cox customers.

Might want to ask your kids to set you up with a Gmail account. Even when Cox email is working, Gmail is better by far. IMO Gmail is better then every ISP's email. Less spam, more secure, and much more features.
