purchasing modem from cox?

I want to replace my DPC3825 gateway with a dedicated modem. looking at the cox-approved list, an SB6183 is on that list, but I can't find where/how to purchase on the site. are those different from the retail one like on amazon? does cox have their own specific firmware on thers? when in my account in "equipment" there is no choice to upgrade equipment, nor is purchasing one an option. will I run into connectivity issues if I use one a buy from amazon?
  • You can buy a brand new 6183 from Amazon with no problem.

The Almond+ is a very good router but a little overpriced.  It's big plus is built-in ZigBee and Z-Wave radios so if you are rolling out home automation it's a excellent choice.  If you just want a WiFi router, there are some higher rated and less expensive choices.  The Netgear R7000 is a top rated R1900 unit available for about $25 less and ASUS RT-AC68U at about $40 less.  There is always TP-Link, they are high rated and can save you $80 to $100 over the Almond+.  Check out SmallNetBuilder for reviews/rankings.
