Powering off Contour 2

Yesterday, I was able to power off my Contour receiver by pressing the left arrow then, then down arrow to power off options and from there, select power saver now.

Today, when I press the left arrow, it takes me to the Notifications Settings screen and says I have no new notifications, I am all caught up.

What changed and why? And note I have all notifications turned off so I should be caught up.

Now, to power off the receiver, I either have to get up and press the power button on the receiver (which is VERY user UNfriendly), or go through a dozen+ steps to get to, then through the Settings menu to get to Device Settings > Power Preferences > Start Power Saver Now > Start Now.

That is incredibly ridiculous when intuitively, the "All Power" button should do it in one click. How do I at least get the left arrow path option back?

  • Digerati,

It sounds like you've turned off the Control Panel option, if you press the left arrow and only see notifications. Here's how you can turn Control Panel on.

Press the Contour Button on the remote.
Highlight the Gear icon, press OK
    Highlight Labs, press OK
Highlight Control Panel, turn this On.

Once this is on, you should be able to exit the menu, then use the left arrow key to access the control panel.

I am really confused now. Just 1/2 hour ago, after getting caught up on the news, I tried the left arrow option again and there was the notifications message again. So I went through the other menu options to turn it off.

Then I checked my email, saw your message and eagerly checked it out. But I was sad to see Control Panel was already set to On.

So I backed out of that menu and decided to check the left arrow one more time, and suddenly, there was the exit menu!

I have no clue how it was disabled then suddenly enabled again just by visiting that page without making any changes.

This is not first time it seemed settings changed, then mysteriously changed back but since I have only had this Contour box for about a month, and it is so different from my old Motorola DVR, I thought it was just me - especially since this was the first time for this Control Panel settings.

I have to say, while there are some features to this Contour 2 box I like over the old Motorola (namely, more storage space and ability to record 2 channels while watching a 3rd), I expected it to be much more user friendly and intuitive. I consider myself a pretty tech savvy guy, but this leaves much to be desired.

Oh well. I am glad it seems to be sorted out. Thanks for your help, Dustin. Much appreciated.

Well, now I know it is not me. It has happened again. But now, when I go to Contour > Gear/Settings > Labs, Control Panel is not even listed! The only options there are Autoplay Next Episode and HDMI link.

So, how do I turn on Control Panel and have it stay on?

  • Digerati,

I recommend unplug the power to the receiver for 20 seconds. After the reset completes, perform the steps to verify the Control Panel is set to On.

No luck. Control Panel is still not a listed option under Labs after the receiver reset.

  • Digerati,

I'm not able to replicate this issue on the Contour receiver in the office. Is this happening on all Contour receivers in your home? Please press the CONTOUR button, then the gear icon, and Highlight About and press OK. What is the XRE Server Version?

    I only have one receiver.

    The Server Version is: 1.76.02 06/16/2017 14:38

And thanks for staying with me, Dustin.

  • Digerati,

Thanks for the XRE version. I reset my Contour 2 receiver as it was not that recent, and now see the update has made this change, and is no longer available. I will pass along your suggestion for this feature to be considered again. At this time, the power off manually by using the power button on the front of the receiver is the only option to power off the Contour 2 receiver.

I am curious why yours was not current. I just looked through the menu options and could not find any setting that allowed me to control when devices were updated. I am pretty sure there was an update option that defaulted to 3:30am and I could change the time, but I could not disable automatic updates. But now, I cannot even see any update options. :(

So it seems Cox is pushing users to never turn off the receiver - or to just use the auto power off based on some number of hours since the remote was last touched (which I found inconvenient).

In my opinion the receiver should go into standby when the connected TV is turned off. This  would be the intuitive option when the All Power button is pressed.

Oh well. I guess I should be happy to know it is not just me or my receiver. Thanks Dustin.

"In my opinion the receiver should go into standby when the connected TV is turned off." I agree that would be a great add. My cable box is one of the biggest users of electricity in my house. But I don't want to turn it off because I will miss recording shows I'm interested in.
