Packet Loss while playing online video games!

Hello,

Despite the title I actually have no idea if it's packet loss i'm experiencing or what. That is just what has been suggested to me by others.

Below are tracer and pathping tests ran to the servers of the video game (World of Warcraft) that I play on and experience the issue.

The video game tech support has not been helpful whatsoever (they haven't even responded to any inquiry, actually) so I was hoping you guys could help determine if it is my home ISP or what! Thanks!

Looking the results you've posted I'm not seeing anything that would indicate packet loss taking place. The result where hop 2 isn't responding is normal and no actual loss is taking place as how we can see form the hops afterwards there is no loss. It looks like the destination network is also blocking all ICMP traffic so we cannot see what is going on there.

  • Thanks for the reply Chris,

I'm not sure what ICMP traffic is, but I got a reply from a blizzard tech support and they asked me to provide a WinMTR report as the issue persisted. They said the same as you that the tracer/path really didn't show anything.

Here are the results of the WinMTR:

Can you give me any suggestions on what I might try?

ICMP traffic is basically ping and trace route. It's junk traffic not used for anything but troubleshooting purposes and as such is often discarded by networking equipment that doesn't want it. These results also look good from what you've posted. It's possible the problem is not related to Internet.

  • Hey Chris,

I sent that latest report to the game devs and they said there was packet loss on hop 3 which was on the ISP side of things, which they said would cause all of the symptoms I was experiencing in-game.

Any idea on what I can do to resolve the hop 3 issue?

    Thanks

If the problem you're experiencing is specific to gaming you may want to look at this thread. Your modem appears to be one of the models affected by a strange latency bug:
