Packet Loss and Slow Internet

I'm in Irvine and the last two weeks my internet seems to have gotten much slower and bad for gaming. When I use pingtest.com to check my connection, I consistently get 1% packet loss or more and high to low amounts of jitter. I tried resetting the router, and the modem, and connecting to the modem directly, but the connection doesn't improve. I would appreciate any help.

A good place to start might be to get some trace routes to the destination you're trying to reach so that we may see if there are any problems in the path and where they may lie.

So I should run a tracert in command? Where do I aim it?

  • Hi Andy,

You mentioned that you are a gamer. What games do you play? We suggest running a traceroute to the main game server. Most online games publish the IP addresses of their game servers for testing purposes. For example, the IP addresses for Blizzard games can be found at https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7648.

    15 165 ms 157 ms 158 ms 185.40.65.1

    Trace complete.

I also play smash brothers online where you are required to connect to each other over a traversal server and the internet lags there as well.

It looks like the server you're trying to connect to is hosted in Europe which would explain the latency. Do they host any servers in the U.S.?

    12 * 55 ms 56 ms 192.64.170.1

    Trace complete.

Also every time I do a ping test my connection shows packet loss and jitter, should I reset my modem? I disconnected the router and connected my Ethernet cable to the modem directly but that didn't help.

So far this result you've obtained looks OK. If you see trace routes like this that show loss feel free to post them and we'll take a look.
