Outlook Email - Cox Internet Connection and VPN

I have email through cox and outlook - no issues and everything works correctly; however, this week, I had to install a VPN to work remote from my home office and now whenever I am connected to VPN, I cannot send email.  I get:

Server error: '550 5.1.1 <email address> relaying not allowed'

In my research so far, it seems to be an internet conflict.  Anyone else experience this and have a solution?

    When the VPN is active you're technically not using our Internet connection anymore which explains the relay problem. Changing your server settings per this article should work for both on and off network access to email:
