Outgoing smtp login problem

On my Windows Phone 8, every time I open my email I get a notification that says "Cox account info is incorrect, update your account info for smtp.cox.net and tap save." I read on another forum how to fix it and id did not work. I put my info in the notification and it rejects it. I went into my settings and changed it from smtp.east.cox.net to just smtp.cox.net. I use my full email xxx@cox.net as the login and my password, doesn't work. I also use my email without the @cox.net and it doesn't work. Yet every time I send an email, it sends. I have to hit the back button to get out of the notification and to my email screen, but after a month this has become very annoying. I do not have this problem on my outlook 2007 on my desktop (windows 8.1), but on my windows 8.1 tablet in thunderbird, I have this problem but it won't send at all. The thunderbird problem isn't a very big deal for me but I would like my phone not to ask me my outgoing password every time I open email because it thinks it is incorrect.
  • First the smtp.cox.net vs smtp.cox.net shouldn't matter. Both should work.

Second I would check your account and see if you maybe have a extra smtp entry that has incorrect info. That might explain why it sends  but gives you the error both.

Third you just want to use your username in general but why are you even using username and password for smtp (outbound) mail? Are you sending from outside cox's network? Try no authentication on outbound on port 25. See if that works.

Thanks for your reply. Because of your suggestion I unchecked the box that says outgoing server requires authentication. That didn't work then my test email would not send. I checked that box again but it has a second box that says use same login as the incoming email server. I un selected that and entered my login info for the SMTP server, and it worked. Don't ask me why the same user name and password needs to be entered as if its different for the SMTP, but I will take it. So of anyone else has this problem on a windows phone 8 that seems to be the solution.

  • Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for letting us know that the fix suggested by Health Edge led you down the right path! We have been getting more and more questions about Windows 8 issues lately, so I know we will reference this thread in the future.

Health Edge, thank you, as always!

Don't thank me, I helped out of pure luck. I was thinking windows 8 PC and not Windows 8 phone, so I thought he was on a Cox network desktop, and thus not needed authentication. More thanks should go to Jonathan for the solution! LOL

I think what might have happened is when you created the account and it copied the incoming user and password for the outgoing, it saved it to a file. Then maybe your password changed, and updating in the incoming field wasn't updating for the outgoing fields? Great work around.

And Beck, thanks for the gratitude. Thank you guys/girls too!

Glad you got it resolved..phew, glad not many people have Windows 8 phones or I'd have to deal with that issue a lot more myself in my line of work.
