Outgoing Emails

Emails are not being sent from Outlook 2013 consistently.  They will sit in the outbox for over 24 hours and then occasionally when I go into Outlook they will send without me doing anything.  I have not changed my settings - it had been working for several years.  The error I get is that outlook cannot connect to the outgoing email server.
