Not hitting 300MB

I just noticed that I'm supposed to be getting 300MB down.  I upgraded my modem earlier this year to the SB6183 to get 250MB after I was notified of the upgrade to my service.

However, I'm not even hitting 250MB (Cox speed test is 229MB down) - do I need to change something on the modem?

  • Hi JohnDD,

That modem is fine for that level of service. Are you testing wired or wireless? What type of router do you have? Are you able to bypass the router and run a wired test directly to the modem?

    Thank you,

Hi NicholeC, I just re-ran the test direct wired (previous was wired but via Ubiquti router and a Netgear switch).  Results are the same as you can see....

The signal levels are showing normal and there are no bonding issues that I can see from it's logs. Do you get similar results from other speed test sites as well?

Yes, I do get similar results.  Actually worse, I'm giving Cox the benefit of the doubt by using their speed test.

So, what do I need to do?

@JohnDD Are you using a Killer branded or any other network adapter with QoS by chance?  Also, when did you try testing without the router?  From this end it looks like a substantial period of time has passed since a different device has been connected directly to the modem.

The laptop I tested with, directly to the modem on the date I posted the results, has a Qualcomm Athereos AR8171 NIC.  I see no QoS features on this adapter.

I just tried a different laptop that has an Intel NIC - same result (this is directly wired to the modem)

If you're seeing the same results with multiple devices connected directly it may be time to see about having a technician come out and troubleshoot further.

Well, scheduled the tech for today, no show.  In the meanwhile I looked at my modem status.  I see 12 bonded upstream channels - shouldn't I have 16?
