Cox is running an TV add stating that I will not be able to recieve anything directly from the wall without this box..

That is correct, gregfuji.  Cox is switching to an encrypted digital signal and everyone needs a set-top box or cable card to continue receiving service.  The set-top box can be anything from a minibox, digital cable box or DVR, what you need depends on your subscription.  Like I said, your best bet is to contact Cox customer service for exactly what you need an prices in your market.
