Music Choice

After several hours of listening to Music Choice I lose the connection.  If I re-enter the channel, Music Choice returns.  I tried disconnecting the box from power source but that has not resolved the problem.   This is recurring problem.  Anyone experience this problem and if so, have you identified the cause and a resolution ?

  • Boney B,

It sounds like your Music Choice channel may be a Switched Digital channel, which will cause the channel to timeout after a period of time if there is no action taken by the viewer. In the case of Switched Digital channels, what will typically happen is you, the viewer will see a message asking if you are still watching. If no action is taken when the message appears, the signal will stop broadcasting.

I don' understand the reply.  I am accessing Music Choice (streaming radio) via Cox.  Typically, I am not watching when listening to radio hence if there is a message asking that I confirm I am still viewing it is not likely I would see it given that I am always doing something else when listening to MC,  Are you saying that Cox has configured MC to time-out?  If so, are you suggesting the solution is to stay close to my TV and watch for the message on my screen?

  • Boney B,

Switched Digital Video technology is not a Cox-specific product or service, which only sends signals for programs the customer is watching or recording instead of the traditional method of broadcasting all signals from TV networks.
After six continuous hours of viewing an SDV channel, the receiver will change to a non-SDV slate channel, displaying the following message.

"The channel you are watching has timed out due to inactivity. Enter the channel number to resume viewing."

Is this the message you see after the channel has stopped broadcasting?

Thank you for your reply.  I don't know another way to explain  my point of confusion.  Music Choice is a Cox channel.  I don't recall any message asking if I  still viewing the channel, however as stated in my earlier reply...it's a music channel, there is nothing to view so what is the point of offering a music channel that will time-out.  No doubt I am missing some key technical point here nonetheless, it makes no sense that I need to monitor my screen (waiting for a message)  while listening to music so that I can confirm I still listening to music.   Life is too short and this is not worth the aggravation.  I will find another solution for streaming radio.  Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • Boney B,

While Music Choice is a source of music, it's still a channel being broadcast to your home across our network and subject to the same handling processes as any other channel. If you are viewing the channel in HD, perhaps try the non-HD version of the channel to see if it will circumvent the SDV standard. Some, but not all non-HD programming is still broadcast continuously.
