Minibox RF adapter and the URC3220 RF remote control

Does anyone know the identification number of the RF adapter module that plugs into the IR port on the back of the minibox?  This is the small piece of RF4CE hardware that will make the minibox able to communicate with the RF remote control (URC3220).  This is a conversion item for the minibox to shift it from IR (infrared) to RF (radio frequency).  I have spent quite a bit of time talking with the people at the Cox Call Center and for the most part none of them have any idea what I am talking about.  If I could just give them an ID number, then they should be able to send me one.  So far my discussions with the call center have resulted in them sending me 4 IR remotes (model: URC2220) and 3 RF remotes (model: URC3220), but not the RF adapter that these RF remotes can talk to. However, at this time, I have another attempt in the mail heading my way.  (I hope this one isn't the standard IR remote extender on the end of a 24" wire.)  My plan is to use one minibox with RF control to provide a signal to about 3 TVs located in different rooms in my basement that are tuned to channel 3, and have one of each of the remotes set up for each of the TVs. The IR portion of the remote will control the TV and the RF portion of the remote will talk to the minibox to change channels, etc.  (the only drawback is that all TVs will have to watch the same channel, but that's OK for my system)  From the picture that I see on the RF programming instructions that I have acquired for this RF adapter, this looks like a small module that is about 1/2" thick, 1" wide and 2" tall with a miniplug sticking out one side that will plug into the minibox IR jack and a pairing pushbutton on the other side.

Has anybody else managed to do something like this, if so, then please provide how you managed to do it.

  • Hi Wd5hyq,

It sounds like you are referring to the Universal RF4CE Serial Adapter. I'm sorry that you've had such a hard time finding one of these RF adapters! I'm happy to take care of this for you. Email my team at Cox.Help@cox.com and I can drop-ship an adapter to you. Also include your full name, address, Cox PIN, and a link to this page in your email. The RF Adapter is paired with a mini box RF remote, model RF 3220-R. Do you already have an RF 3220-R remote control?

    Thanks Becky,

I got the same info from the Cox Phone Support team and I have received one of the RF adapters as of today, however,  I could use one more of the RF  3220 remotes.

I will reply to my earlier post with the info that I have discovered for anyone else that is looking for this type of operation.

    THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED!!!

After lots of conversations with the Cox call center telephone support people, and quite a number of searches on Google and Bing, I have finally received the elusive RF adapter for the minibox.

    Here are the details:

The little RF module that plugs into the back of the minibox IR jack to convert it being an RF operated minibox is listed on my shipping label as:

Line #            Kit ID                             Item Group

    -----------        --------------             --------------------------------

    1                    XRFADAPTER     No CPE Required

    Line #          Part #                           Description

    ------------     ---------------                  -------------------------------

    1                  509-0104                    RF ADAPTER REPLMNT

    1                  720-0029                    SMALL ENVELOPE

So if anyone else is wanting to get their Cox minibox to work with an RF remote control instead of the Infra Red remote that is standard delivery, this is the info that you can use to talk to the Cox phone center people to get it ordered.  Oh and one more thing, I haven't checked the maximum distance of the operation between the remote and minibox, but it is at least 50 feet.  It also comes with an instruction sheet on how to pair the RF remote to the RF adapter so that the remote talks to the minibox.
