Lost connection

Yesterday I installed the new modem which Cox told me to get from them so my internet would be twice as fast.  Well, it's not.  I play online chess, and now while playing I frequently lose connection so that I cannot finish the game.  I tried all the different connection settings at chess.com, but all of them acted the same.  So my new faster modem is actually slower.  I notice it acts funny when I try to open news pages, etc.  It seems like it gets there quickly but takes longer than the old modem to load.  Any help would be appreciated.  My desktop computer which I use for most of this is an iMac with OSX 10.8.5.  I would have a newer one, but then I would lose much of the functionality because of different software requirements I currently have.

Are you hardwired directly to the modem or wireless? If wireless reboot the modem bypass router and hardwire your pc to modem then run a speed test on cox.com
