IPv6 prefix changing

Is it normal for, or are there circumstances under which you can expect, the IPv6 prefix delegated to you by Cox to change? (I had been under the impression that, unlike IPv4 addresses, these were not dynamically assigned.)

I ask in this case because my /56 just has after bouncing the external interface on my border router, which I would not have thought should cause that. (I had expected that it might change, on the other hand, after upgrading my modem some months ago, which did not appear to cause it; although, on thinking back, this is the first time the external interface has been administratively down since the modem was swapped out.)

In any case, is there any word on when and why this can be expected to happen? While the router picks up the change of prefix just fine interface address-wise, it does force me to manually rejig the neighbor discovery config on the internal interface, the firewall rules, and my external DNS, in order to restore connectivity which is something of a pain in the neck, belike.

Residential address is all allocated dynamically and can change from time to time. Typically residential grade routers can handle this gracefully however if you need static addressing Cox Business Services may have offerings that are a better fit for your needs.

My address received from cox is not a correct ipv6 address (with ::in front and the router report it is not a global unicast address

  • Omoeba,

I've checked your area and others are showing valid IPv6 addressing nearby. Please provide your router's manufacturer name and model number for further assistance.

Netgear R8500 router with Arris sb6190 modem (currently disabled ipv6 because a broken ipv6 interrupts video streaming)
  • Omoeba,

Your modem won't pull an IPV6 address if IPV6 is turned off in your router so we're unable to troubleshoot it in this state. When you have time to do so, please turn IPV6 back on.

See page 34-36 of manual for "Set Up an IPv6 DHCP Internet Connection".

The internet connection type should be set to "DHCP" because Cox uses DHCPv6. Also be sure to check "IP address assignment" to "Use DHCP Server". This should route more info from Cox to your clients via DHCPv6. When set to "Auto config" the router won't pass the new routes, which change every 48hr or so on Cox.

Depends. If it's not working, try it. Turn off modem and router, then boot modem and wait for the lights, then turn on the router.
