Internet speed

I am currently getting between 12 and 20 MBPS in my bandwith readings(directly from the modem not through a router) from the speed test link located on the cox website. A tech came to my house to diagnose the problem. After confirming my readings he went to get his (Own Persnonal laptop) as he presented it... From it he got readings of 65 MBPS...That was considerably faster than the tech who originally set it up was able to get ( in fact he told me that on their network the modem would max out at around 50 MBPS (He got me to 45)). When I inquired about the disparity he said "you probably have a bad Ethernet port". I was still concerned about the surprisingly high reading he was able to get relative to me so before he left I got a newer laptop that I had. It returned results almost identical to the readings on my other laptop. After he left I was able to get my hands on two other laptops belonging to friends. they too returned readings more in line with my original readings. It seems all four of the computers I tested had bad Ethernet ports. while I imagine the statistical likelihood of that happening is very small I guess it could happen in some theoretical world. The modem is an Arris that is a few years old. Is there anything else I can try in hopes of getting closer to the magical numbers the Cox tech was able to reach?

Did you use the same ethernet cable for all those speed tests you mentioned? Please email your full address, primary name on the account, and this URL so we can take a look.

Yes it was my Ethernet cable so I was able to use it even for the subsequent testing that I did..And it was the same one the tech used that delivered a drastically different reading. He also said that some computers have settings on them that restrict the bandwith but he didn't know where to find them on a windows 10 computer.... That makes no sense to me. If such limitation settings do exist on computers I seriously doubt that a newer computer would by default limit performance to less than 20 MBPS. I also doubt that all four of those computers could have those limitations preset. Would you be able to tell me where I can find the settings he would have been speaking of?

He also suggested several time that I should go directly to the test site rather than using the link listed on your website. I am not technical enough to understand the logic of that but should I not use the link on your website if I want to perform a reliable bandwith test? And yes, The computers were all tested both ways with almost identical results.

The Cox speed test sites are hosted on our own servers within our network. We can't guarantee speeds once traffic leaves our network; however, you should get comparable results from other sites. In reference to your limitation settings, you would need to contact Microsoft because that is something we support. We would also like to check your signal levels from our end please email to cox.help@cox.com full address and primary name on the account.
