Internet speed super slow

I have a DSA321N modem.  It has been installed for a few years.  I am a premier customer.   I am currently getting the following speeds using Cox speed checker it shows 17.83 Mbps and using CNET speed checker it shows 5.93 using a wired connection.   Over the past few months I have noticed that my speed is much lower then I am paying to received.  I had a Linksys router E1200 and just purchased a new Cisco Linksys E1200 thinking that it could be a router problem but the speeds are staying about the same.  Any idea of what the problem is?

    Standard slow speed diagnostic steps/questions:

    Bypass your router and check speeds that way, on a wired connection.

    You have tested with two separate speed testers, and both show abnormal speeds, so it's unlikely to be a tester artifact.

    Go to http://192.168.100.1 use blanks for username/password - see if you can access the signal status of the modem, please capture that and let us see it.

    One of the mods should be able to check your modem from their end, to see if there are signal issues, but it doesn't hurt for you to be aware of them.

    I suspect the problem may be with the specs of that particular router. It doesn't have gigabit Ethernet ports which are going to need to be standard for any level above Preferred to get good speeds.

  • I also have a drop in internet speeds. In June, I had download speeds of 65 mbps and upload speeds of 22 mbps.

    Today I checked and download is 8.02 and upload 12.02.

    Channel 4 upload does show as in a timeout state, that would contribute to some connection issues.  I'd really recommend bypassing your router and checking the speed at:

    http://www.fast.com

    http://speed.googlefiber.net/

    And seeing what you get

    @Internet Speed has dropped down

    From this end all looks well with the connection to your modem. Can you try connecting a PC directly to the modem then resetting the modem and see if that works any better?

    I changed to bypass the router and I got up in the 60's Mbps.  I assume that I need a better router.  But it still is a little slower then I am suppose to receive.

    doctork, did you test with a gigabit NIC when you bypassed the router?  If the NIC is 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet), that's the absolute max you will receive, probably somewhat slower.  Any plan Premier and above you must test with a wired, gigabit connection to get a true reading.

    Definitely, the router must go if you want to get what you pay for.  I recommend either an ASUS or Netgear Nighthawk wireless "ac" router if your budget can handle it.  If you want a lower price point, the TP-Link Archer C7 is a good choice at around $87.

    I'm not sure where you stand now with the connections although I'm now seeing a non-Cisco branded device connected to the modem which is also connecting at 100Mbps. As AllenP suggested you'll need to use a gigabit capable Ethernet device to get the full potential from your connection.
