Internet speed drops down to < 1M at night and back up >15M in morning

Hi,

Speed test indicate my internet is 16Mbps download, and 2Mbps upload in the day time and evening, but after midnight, the download speed drops to less than 1Mbps.  Upload is still at 2Mbps.   I reset the modem, contacted support multiple times, but nothing helps.  This occured on multiple occasions.

Our internet usage is heavier in the daytime than after midnight.  Our computers, and router are all new up to date equipments.  The only old equipment is the Cox motorola SB5101 modem.   Anyone experienced the same problem and know of a fix?  I'm actually browsing ATT and ready to switch if Cox cannot fix this.

 Thanks,

T

    Hello Trip782,

I think upgrading your modem would help, we can also check for any issues on our end. Your current modem is a Docsis 2.0 modem, you would get faster speeds just by upgrading your modem to a Docsis 3.0 modem. You do not have to buy your modem through Cox, we have a list of approved modems - http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=b2ec95d0-7ef9-11df-5590-000000000000. If you'd like for us to check the signal, please send an email with the account information to cox.help@cox.com.

Upgrade that SB5101 to an SB6121 or 2141 ASAP! That thing's 13 years old, a dinosaur in technology years.

Funny - I've been experiencing similar issues for the past week. I happen to have a Docsys 3.0 Motorola modem & a Belkin router. Both devices have been reset several times to no avail. Usually, the bandwidth gets extremely throttled just after midnight & lasts until 9AM. Speed tests are an atrocious <1MB during this period. Cannot even retrieve my E-mail at those speeds or 99 percent of websites. Presently the bandwidth is at 5 mb according to Cox speed tests - still far below the 150 mb/s claimed by Cox for the Premier package I'm currently paying for.

Requesting an explanation/solution for this issue. Otherwise, this 16yr Cox subscriber will be compelled to cancel the service altogether.

    Regards,

When I look at your modem from this end I'm seeing packet loss and signal noise issues. Are there any cable splitters you can try bypassing and seeing if that helps?

First of all, thanks Chris for analyzing the packet loss & S/N issues. I do in fact have a cable splitter but installing a direct connection really didn't show much improvement, if any.

However, there was some improvement in bandwidth only after I pulled the Belkin router out of the network. As a result, the tested download speed was around 3mbs instead of 1mbs before 6AM this morning. Presently,  the download bandwidth is just over 160 mbs while upload speed is about 12mbs.

It sounds like the router may be contributing some but we probably need to get the signal and packet loss issues corrected first. You can see if you get better results with a different cable outlet although I suspect a tech will probably need to come out and troubleshoot further.
