Internet Service

I tried to cancel all my cox services except for internet and was told I needed to keep my phone and a basic cable package in order to keep my internet access.  I also had to keep one of their modems for which I am required to pay a monthly charge.  Does this sound correct?  Seems like I can just use the cable coming in to the house to hook up to my modem.
