Internet and port 80

I recently bought a iris security and home automation system.  Upon not being able to get it connected and spending hours on the phone with tech support, I was told to check with my Isp to make sure ports 80 and 443 are open and if not ask them to open.  I called cox tech support and was told 443 is open but 80 is blocked and they cannot open it.  Iris said without port 80 open the system cannot function.  Is there any way to make this work?

Is Iris using port 80 inbound or outbound?  If inbound, yes Cox does block it and you are not going to get them to open it.  Port 80 outbound is open by default, it's the standard http port and web browsing wouldn't work if it was blocked.  Port 443 is open in both directions but you may have to setup port forwarding rules to use it for inbound traffic.  Since Iris communicates from it's hub to a website, my guess it it's using port 80 outbound and you should be ok.  Does your router have a firewall running, if so, that could be causing your problems.  What specific problem and what errors are you getting?

Thanks for your response and help on this.  I'm very much a novice on how the ports and port forwarding and all that works so bear with me.  I'm not 100% sure if it's inbound or outbound.  I do know my router has a firewall and I shut it off, doesn't seem to help.  Pretty much the way it works is the hub is supposed to connect to the internet and then I register it.  Once registered it gets it's ip address.  The problem so far is that I can't even get it to connect so I can register it.  I have access to the port forwarding and all that on my router but not really to sure how to use it.  I just set one of these up at my girlfriends and she has att, from what i understand they do not have 80 blocked and it connected no problems.  How would i go about trying to forward the port?

I've never setup the Iris system so really can't help there.  If it does, indeed, need inbound port 80, there's nothing you can do.  Cox won't open port 80 inbound so port forwarding 80 won't have any effect.  It plain won't work on Cox if that's a requirement.

In general, when you setup port forwarding first you must assign a fixed ip to the target device.  That can be done in the LAN or DHCP setup, setting a fixed ip by MAC address.  Where it's done depends on your router.  After you setup the fixed ip, then you go to the port forward screen and enter the port number or range and the ip to receive the input.  Again, actual screens depend on your router.  But, I haven't found any port forwarding requirements in my search of Iris documentation.  Everything I have seen is follow the setup instructions, plug it in and it should connect.  Nothing about any special port requirements.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • Hi Cd1177,

I can confirm that Cox blocks inbound port 80. Learn more about why specific port numbers are blocked at http://bit.ly/PortsRestrictedByCox.
