I want to change my cable modem to a modem-router but want to be sure it is compatible

I want to change my cable modem to a modem-router but want to be sure it is compatible with Cox......I am interested in buying the:

TRENDnet's 300Mbps Wireless N Home Router, model TEW-731BR

Would I still be able to use the cable modem and turn off the wi-fi now and then?

    The TEW-731BR is not a modem-router(AKA gateway) but a stand alone router. A gateway will have somewhere you can connect cable/coaxial to. Are you asking if it is compatible with your modem or gateway? If so, what model do you have now?
