HD

How do I tell if my subscription includes HDTV signals?  When I tune to an HD channel I am only getting 480p. When I go to my Roku streaming channels I get 1080p.

    if you get a picture on the channel your getting hd service also different channels broadcast in different resolutions so 420 could be what that channel chose to broadcast hd in

    Gadola, what set top box are you using and how is it connected to your TV? If you are using a minibox connected via coax, that's all the minibox will output, it must be connected using HDMI to get an HD signal.

    Andrew, 420 (or 480p) is not HD, it's SD. Minimum resolution for HD is 720p. If the OP is getting 480p, it's a connection or setting problem with the STB.

    Thanks for the reply.  I am tuning to HD transmissions, etc., Cox's HD channels in the 1000's.  All show 480.

    I have the Cisco GSH4742 receiver.  It is connected to the TV by an HDMI cable AND by a coax.  If I disconnect the coax from the TV I lose the signal. So, not sure what the HDMI feed from box is doing.

    The coax output of the GSH4742 is SD only, see this page. I don't have a unit to test with but you may have to change the video settings of the box to output to HDMI. In any case, you don't want to use the coax, it won't give you HD. It's either a setting or bad HDMI port on the STB, first guess is a setting

    Edit: one additional thought, do you have the HDMI port where the STB is connected to the TV selected for the TV input? Since you are getting signal on the coax port, sounds like that may be selected.

  • Hi Gadola,

    Disconnect the coax cable from your TV. Make sure the HDMI cord is still connected from the HDMI OUT port of the cable box to one of the HDMI IN ports on the TV. Turn on the cable receiver and the TV. Press the TV button once on the Cox remote. Press the INPUT button on the Cox remote to switch from one video input source to another. Set the TV to the HDMI input that matches the number of the port the HDMI cord plugs into. Are you getting a picture, a colored screen, or an error message?

    Thanks Becky - your posting tipped me off to what I was doing.  I had the wrong INPUT selected.  By the way, my receiver has only an ON/OFF button - no other switches.  Also the remote does not have an INPUT button (at least not labeled as such) - I use the input selector on my TV remote.

    Thanks to all who gave me feedback.

    Hi Gadola,

    I'm glad we were able to assist with your issue.  In regards to the input button on the remote, which Cox remote do you have?

    @Gadola,

    The input button should be underneath the number 7 on the remote.
