Game Lags/High Ping Late at Night

I've been using the Cox service since September 2016 and had no issues up until about a week ago. I have been experiencing lag while playing Overwatch around 11 pm. It often will clear up around 01:00 am. I am wondering what this could possibly be. I ran a traceroute and it seems that the high ping starts at 10.80.44.1. What is 10.80.44.1? Traceroute is shown below. Note that this is a wired connection from my computer to router to modem. I checked all physical cables/connections and they are secure. Nothing has changed with the physical space. I have restarted all devices computer, router, and modem. I have also tried disabling the wifi and only allowing the desktop to access the connection. I have also verified that nothing else is using significant bandwith.

Would it be possible to try getting some trace routes without the router and posting the results?

  • I tried connecting the modem directly to my computer, but I suspect that Cox did not recognize the Mac address and it did not work. Any suggestions on how I can do this? Do I need to register my desktop mac address on the system, or am I completely misunderstanding how it works?I tried connecting the modem directly to my computer, but I suspect that Cox did not recognize the Mac address and it did not work. The modem will remember the previously connected MAC address and simply needs to be rebooted when connecting a new device.

  • I will try this next time I am home and encounter this issue (likely tonight). Note that when I started this thread, I was having this issue and it resolved itself around 1:30 am. This is consistent with what I have been experiencing for over a week now.

  • gamboashakespear,

Thanks. Let us know what you find. Please also keep in mind our maintenance is usually completed overnight, so it might be part of what you're seeing. I'm able to confirm work has been being done over the last few nights in your area.

  • I tried playing a few games tonight and it was perfect until about 10:15 pm PST (consistent with what I have been experiencing for over a week now). I tried connecting my modem directly to my computer. It made no difference. This is extremely frustrating. I am only home and awake about two hours per day and I like to spend the time playing games. I can't even do that with this connection.

Here is the Traceroute with the modem connected directly to my desktop:

Do you have any trace routes to the game server address? Also, can you run 2 other trace routes to different websites so we can compare them?
  • I cannot run this until the problem reoccurs (I'm expecting tonight); however, I have done it previously to the game server, to google, and several other servers. The results are the same. The high pings always come from 10.80.44.1. I still do not know what 10.80.44.1 is.

  • Here are more traceroutes (including to the game server -- the first one). As you can see, the spikes appear on the second hop 10.80.44.1:

From this end I'm not seeing any abnormal latency from us to the modem. If you're still seeing problems without the router it may be time to see about having a technician come out and troubleshoot further.
