free broadcast channels on cable line

So it's always been my understanding that the local broadcast channels were available on the cable without a converter.

I currently have a full contour package but am looking to drop it and get a Cox Mini Box (only).  Will I be able to get the local channels without a package/subscription this way?

No, all channels, including the locals, are being encrypted with the conversion to all digital.  You need a minimum of a minibox on each TV to get anything.

If you just want the "locals" free, then you'd want an antennae.

Yes - I am talking about with a mini box.  My question is if a minibox alone with suffice or if I need to purchase a programming package.

Distance from the nearest TV source is a major issue (in the sticks).

Not sure I completely understand your question.  Are you asking if you can get the local channels, using a minibox, for free off the cable without subscribing to a programming package?  If so, no.  The minibox works with the Starter & Essential packages, you must subscribe to one of those to make it work.

a mini box requires service, but I'm not sure what's the mini box requirements/ lowest tier you can access with it
