Extremely large amount of Spam emails beginning with the new year.

My husbands and my email box has been receiving large quantities of spam email advertisements since the new year began.  I send them to the spam  report to cox button but doesn't seem to stop.  I don't open them, so I'm not showing that my address is valid but they just won't stop.

I receive one newsletter from our local crime prevention  group and I forward it to one person and now I am getting shutdown from sending any emails for up to three hours.  Why?

  • Hi Ginny, what program are you using for email? Cox Web Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail?

    I am also receiving an excessive amount of spam mail. I took my cox e-mail address off my phone because it was so annoying.

    They put a message above the email send telling me that because I may have exceeded my allowable messages and may be a spammer I was being shut down for up to 3hrs from sending messages.  I repeat I forward only one local crime report newsletter maybe every other day to one neighbor so what is the problem with that?  Does reporting all the spam emails cause this?  I don't open the obvious garbage that is coming through my email since January and report it and send it to the trash. So why stop my sending ability.  After a few hours I can forward my newsletter but why must I wait?  This is not fair and not what I pay for.

    Nothing. If your just sending one email to one person a day, thats WAY below the limit. Cox purposly doesn't tell people what the limit is, but it's probably in the hundreds. I think Cox email is being flooded with spam, both inbound and outbound, and it's breaking the automated systems designed to monitor it. I would suggest asking to be put on the Cox feedback loop, which monitors and informs you when your email is marked by spam and by who. It takes some red tape and time, but it's worth it.     I have the same issue but mine started late last year. I log on to cox webmail and use the report as spam button but things aren't getting better. I get about 20 spam messages a day and that's before lunch. I notice one thing common about a 99% of them... the last part of the domain name is the same. Here is just a sample of what I'm talking about....

    This is a problem for most spam filters because it uses a virtual address that uses random subdomains to get around blocks. Also, they are sending through a valid server, so they can't block the IP either. See here for more info. There is probably a way to block it on Cox side, but it's difficult and the new email servers may handle it differently.

    The trick for the user is set up a rule to block with a wildcard. A wildcard or * stands for a unknown, and covers everything before it. Not sure if it would work with Cox's system, but it's worth a try. Here is a picture but I can include instructions if it's not clear.

    I'm battling the war on spam along with you. Spammers are very inventive. As Tecknowhelp points out, spammers are constantly creating new ways to get around Spam Blockers. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with email spam. You can find more resources at http://bit.ly/SpamResourceCenter.

    Make sure that your WebMail SpamBlocker Settings are set to deliver junk email to the WebMail Spam folder for later review. This will help you manage the quantity of spam by removing it from your Inbox. Review the email in the WebMail Spam folder once a week, and be sure to use the “This is Not Spam” button for any email that isn’t spam. We use your reports to improve our Spam Blockers.

    Jlowery68, the email address examples you provided would be very valuable to our Network Abuse Team, and may allow us to identify the spammer and add them to our black list. Follow the steps found at http://bit.ly/CoxReportingAbusePolicy and send the original email as an attachment to spamreport@cox.net. Due to the high volume of email received, a personal response is not provided to each report. Please do not interpret a lack of response as a lack of action. We may never be able to stop Spam, but I believe we can make a difference by working together.
