Email - Unable to send or receive

I can receive email on the Cox web site but I can't connect to my email account with Thunderbird or my android phone. Up until a couple of days ago both Thunderbird and my cell phone worked perfectly and have for the last several years. The only thing that has changed is that I had to change the password on my router, but I don't see how that could have made a difference. Also, my wife has a cox email account and uses the same router and she is not having any problems. I've done everything I can think of to fix the problem and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Update. I created a totally new password for my cox email account and that seems to have fixed all of my problems. I don't know why cox thinks that someone has my password, but apparently cox does. I have never shared my password with anyone.

Yeah, same here.  Using Windows Live Mail with IMAP.  Cox has definitely done something.

It appears your mail client password was changed by our mail team due to being compromised. You'll want to reset your password making sure to use a new and different password that you don't use anywhere else and I would also suggest changing your account PIN and password reset question/answer combinations to further secure your account. -Chris

Are you able to access your email by signing into webmail?

Yes, I can get to email using WebMail. Server Response:  Invalid user name or password. Server imap.cox.net. Protocol IMAP. Port 993.  Secure SSL.  I have changed the password now a second time and am using one that has never been used.

I assure you this is not an "idiot" error.  Something is messed up at COX.   I am very experienced at this.

Let me clarify.  Yes. I can get to email using Webmail.

The error I am getting using Windows Live Mail is:
Server Response:  Invalid user name or password. Server imap.cox.net. Protocol IMAP. Port 993.  Secure SSL.

I was sitting here being frustrated just staring at the screen and a blast of emails suddenly came in.  It is working finally!

  • Hello rollermusic,

Thank you for the update on the status. We're glad to hear Windows Mail is receiving cox.net emails.

Yes if we detect you put your password back to one you've previously used our mail team will keep locking your account until it is changed to something new. As to your question concerning why we think it was compromised the answer there is we found your password on the Internet. Most likely you used the same password for another site or service that got hacked and their account database was leaked publicly.
