DRM Protection

I have a Cox account with 300+ channels pay for the subscription.

I rent a cablecard plugged into a HD Homerun Prime device and almost all of the channels that I am PAYING FOR are copy protected with DRM and the device won't play the channel.

This is unacceptable.  If I log into your website I can play the channel.  If I go to my Apple TV and sign into the channel's corresponding app I can watch live and past shows.  I have everything, but the actual live channel that I am PAYING FOR!!

Can someone give me a good reason why?

Thanks!

I'm sorry Brian, I'm calling baloney.

Other cable providers do not block channels that are blocked on Cox.  It would be uniform nationwide if that was the case.

I am paying for the content thru Cox.  I can log into the Apps on Apple TV and watch the programs either live or on demand with my cable subscription, yet Cox doesn't allow me to use my own equipment to play the live broadcast thru the cable.  They're forcing me to rent additional equipment that I don't need.

Soon the middle man (aka the cable company) will soon be obsolete and the gravy train will come to an end.

  • Hi Kelly858,

What operating system is on the PC running the HD Homerun Prime software?

I have a Mac and the HDHOMERUN software only plays the non-DRM channels.

I use the "Channels" app (Getchannels.com) on the Apple TV to watch from the HDHOMERUN Prime device and it will not play the DRM channels (yet I pay for them).

There are many ways to get content illegally for free, I'm not sure why Cox (and other providers) decide to try to punish their customers.

    Kelly858,

Which channels are not working? What message do you get?

Pretty much all of them are DRM protected but the local channels and the some of the music channels.  This is a screenshot of the channels.  There are over 300 that are protected.

and this is a photo of my TV trying to play a channel that is protected.  Not sure why it's upside down.

    Kelly858,

The third party app (Channels) might not be supported for DRM content. Have you tried HDHomeRun Prime DVR app?

Excuse me, you're missing the point.  Cox shouldn't be putting DRM on channels I subscribe and pay for, period.

Apparently someone at Cox isn't familiar with the FCC rules, so here's a link:

    https://www.fcc.gov/media/cablecard-know-your-rights

    The 7th bullet point:

    • Receive all “linear” channels (channels other than “on-demand”) in your subscription package.  This includes premium channels and specialty channels.  For some channels delivered using a technique called “switched digital video,” you may need a second device called a “tuning adapter.”  This device is typically provided at no additional charge to CableCARD customers.  FCC Rule 76.1205(b)(4).  CableCARD-ready devices currently cannot receive your cable operator’s Video on Demand services.

I'm filing a report to the FCC.

    @Kelly858

I'm not sure how what you posted applies in this situation, I see no mention of DRM there. In either case, DRM should not be stopping you from watching these channels depending on how you're watching them. Perhaps if you could give us more information about your setup we may be able to figure out what is going on.

I'm sorry Chris, I'd like to see the legal credentials you hold as a moderator of a cable forum to give legal advice.

It states very clearly "Receive all “linear” channels (channels other than “on-demand”) in your subscription package"

Cox is blocking those channels by putting DRM on them and I can't get them using my own equipment.  Also, should you have read the thread it states very clearly that I am using a HDHomerun Prime tuner.  And as I am learning it is very expensive for software developers to bypass the DRM that cable companies put on their channels.  Thus, forcing customers to lease equipment that they wouldn't necessarily need if they conformed with the spirit of the FCC rules.

By putting DRM on all the channels (except the local over the air channels) the cable companies are assuming that their customers are going to use the content and distribute it illegally.  Basically assuming your customers are criminals.  It's creating a lot of animosity with your customer base.  Most content is already available free, albeit illegal.

You guys should stop punishing your customers for wanting to do the right thing.
