Cox e mail

I recently received an e mail from Cox (Alert@email.com) It only said to check in for alert! I didn't think it was from you so I didn't do it. I instead went to the Cox sight on my own and signed in. There was no alert. Is this Spam? and how do I keep this from happening again!

    That is not a email address that would originate from us. Messages from Cox would end with @Cox.com as the domain or @Cox.net if they are email account messages for errors or issues. But you would not see messages from other domains from us.
