Contour 2 Record 6 (Arris XG1v3) box with Harmony (universal) remote

We just had this box installed on Saturday and love it and the whole home service.  However, I've been unable to get my Harmony hub to control it.  No command issued from the remote/hub is being executed.  The Arris box sits in the same rack with 4 other devices (Denon AV Receiver, Sony Blu-Ray player, Roku, and Apple TV) that the Harmony controls without issue.

So I have questions:

- If the Arris is paired with the Cox remote by RF, does the Arris box turn off the IR receiver?

- Does anyone else have this working with both a universal (IR) remote AND the Cox remote in RF mode?

- Does anyone know if there is a trick to getting a universal remote to work well with the Arris XG1? (Such as modifying repeat or using codes for a different device?)

Thanks for any help!

  • The information that pairing the RF remote disables the IR port is on the Contour 2 boxes is incorrect.

I currently have 3 Contour 2 host boxes and 1 Contour 2 client box which all have the supplied remote paired for RF but still work just fine with my universal remotes via IR.  I don't have a Harmony remote, but use URC MX-850 remotes and one MX-980.  The key is just finding the right set of IR codes for your Harmony.

Try setting up your Harmony as though you have Comcast Xfinity.  The Contour 2 boxes are really just rebranded Xfinity technology and they use the same hardware so the Comcast Xfinity IR codes should work.

I have the Contour 2 system and would like to use my existing universal remote (IR) as well.  If I unpair the Cox remote with the receiver, will that activate the IR port on the receiver, then enabling me to use my universal remote?  Will the Cox remote still work with the receiver in IR mode as well?

  • bdiluchio,

You can certainly try it. If your existing universal remote doesn't perform the functions you need you could always pair your Cox remote back to the box. In theory, I don't see why both remotes wouldn't both control the box in IR mode, however you should be aware if you have multiple boxes that are unpaired you could experience the Cox remote controlling multiple boxes in close proximity. Also, as Tiffany mentioned, you would no longer have the Voice Remote function available to you on this box.

TiffanyR, I really appreciate the reply.  But I just had a strange experience.  I got a second new contour 2 remote.  I was able to control the box before pairing it to use RF.  Of course, it wouldn't control the box if the remote was pointed the opposite direction.

So are you sure the following statement is true?

    TiffanyR said:
On the New Contour when the remote is paired with the cable box, the infrared port on the cable box is disabled.

  • Jchasen, thanks for your input! You've hit the nail on the head. "The key is just finding the right set of IR codes for your Harmony."

Scott C, are you able to find an X1 code that will work with your Harmony hub?

Great news!  Using the Xfinity X1 codes for the Harmony Hub worked perfectly.  It's very strange that there are codes for the specific hardware model that don't work.  I'll report it to Harmony support.  Thank you all for your help!
