Connection Speed Issues - DOCSIS 3.0
So I just moved and my roommate had a really slow plan that Cox doesn't even offer anymore (like 1 Mbps), so I told him to call and upgrade to Premier (25 Mbps) and he did, however when doing a speed test from the cox website or speedtest.net we are only getting like 10 Mbps.
I figured his modem was just too old so we called up and put my modem on the account, which I had been using with the Premier plan just two months prior and getting great speeds, but even after doing that and a bunch of other troubleshooting (power cycle, reprovisioning, etc) we are still getting the same slow speeds.
So cox sent out a tech, he said we had a DOCSIS 2.0 and needed a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to get those speeds (even though I had been getting those speeds with the DOCSIS 2.0 modem just two months before). When hooked up to my modem he was getting about the same speed (10 Mbps), so he hooked up his modem and it showed about 30 Mbps on his laptop.
So it would seem to be that we need to upgrade the modem to DOCSIS 3.0, the only problem is that when hooked up to his modem, all three of the computers in my house improved to about 16 Mbps, but not to the 30 Mbps he was getting. Even when my laptop was hooked up directly to his modem we still only got 16 Mbps or so.
I am going to upgrade the modem, but I want to get the 25 Mbps I am paying for. If it were only on one computer I would say the computer was the problem, but all of the computers in the house are stuck at the same speed. These are the same computers I was getting the correct speeds on only two months ago at my last apartment. Is there any software, firmware or driver upgrades that may have been present on his laptop and not my computers that I need to use the DOCSIS 3.0 modem and get the correct speeds? The laptop is Vista and desktops are Windows 7.
