Connecting to the Internet with XP

I'm trying to set up an XP virtual machine (with VMWare). I currently can connect to internet and get Bing, but when I try to connect to something else (like Google) I get the page not found error. I suspect I need to set up a default DNS server.

I used to have this info, but long since threw it away. How can I connect to the Internet in XP?

That should be provided along with the IP address info from the router when it comes online. If you're doing this in a VM I suspect it's the VM's network type that may be the issue and not XP itself. You can try experimenting with the VM's networking types to see if that helps.

No, I had the same problem when I installed this particular Win XP disk on a separate machine. Again, I can ping 8.8.8.8 and cox.net just fine, I can get Bing fine, I can get (of all things) John Tiller software just fine). Just most everything else gives me the error page.

Could it be there's something missing from the XP disk?

Google uses SSL now by default and it's quite possible there are no more root certificate updates for XP being and end of life product. I have a friend I help that still uses a Windows 2000 machine due to supporting a very specific software package that is in this situation. Effectively he cannot surf the web anymore due to simply being out of date.
