how does one connect the dvd player to the cox system

You don't. DVD player has nothing to do with cable. You connected it as per the instructions that came with the DVD player.
One doesn't connect a dvd player to the Cox system, they are two separate things. You can connect your dvd player to the same TV as Cox, specifics on how to do that depend on your TV and what inputs it has. Please post details of your TV, dvd player and how the Cox system is connected if you need more help, thanks.
