Cable box won't "auto tune" to all HD channels

In the settings, I have my cable box/DVR set to "auto tune" to HD channels (I'm on Cox in Phoenix with a Scientific Atlanta 8240 HDC DVR).  I really like this feature as I don't have to worry about entering all the numbers if I want to tune to an HD channel that is in the 1000 range.  If I want to watch CBS which is channel 5 here, I just enter 5 and it auto tunes to HD channel which is really 1005.  This feature works on the vast majority of channels, but not all of them.  I suspect this is some type of programming problem by Cox or the firmware on the box. I really don't know why the box even has the channels in the 1000+ range anyway....why doesn't it just always go to HD?

I'm wondering if any of the moderators from Cox on here can look into this for me or let me know who I should contact to see if they can fix this programming issue.  The channels that I've found so far that DON'T auto tune to HD are..... 61, 65, 66, 70, 74, 133, and 134.

Thanks!

  • Hello Davidoo,

What are you seeing when you tune to these channels? Is the picture in HD with the guide info showing Hist HD, but the channel number is showing 61?

  • Thanks for the response Dustin.  No, when I tune to 61 I just get regular HIST on the screen without HD.  It won't auto tune to the HD version.  To get the HD version of History I have to manually tune to channel 1061 and the on screen display then shows HISHD.  All the channels I listed do this incorrectly.  All the others work perfectly though.  For example, if I enter 33 on the remote I get 33 ESPNH, or if I enter 5 I get 5 CBSHD.  I don't know if someone at Cox had to manually program these channels to auto tune to the HD version or if the box does is automatically.  If it is done manually, then perhaps many of these HD channels were added after the initial programming and someone needs to go in and tell the software there is now a History HD and if I tune to 61 it should auto tune to HD.

    Thanks,

    Dave

i have the same setting enabled on mine, Explorer 4642, but it's never worked.  It's a design flaw.  What do you expect for a box costing $102 dollars a year?

  • Hi Davidoo,

An update for Rovi HD Auto-Tune is scheduled to launch in Phoenix in late October. Would it be okay if we table your question until after the launch? I set a reminder for myself so I can let you know when the update is pushed to HD receivers and HD DVRs. Once the update is released, I'll have you turn the Auto-Tune to HD feature off and then back on. We can troubleshoot from that point forward.

Perhaps I can be the guinea pig in this launch.  When is update scheduled for NoVa?

  • Hi Bruce,

We don't have a date for Northern Virginia at this time. I'll let you know when I hear more!

Why don't the Contour 1 box or my Samsung Smart Media Player/CableCard box have the autotune feature. The tips of my fingers are starting to wear off with the extra 10xx keying effort.

I'm starting to get spoiled with the Mini boxes.

  • Hi Ed,

The HD Auto-Tune feature is not yet available for Contour 1. We hope to have another update shortly after the first of the year.

Thanks for the information, Becky. I didn't expect an update for Contour 1 because it's been over a year since the last one. Sure hope it happens and auto-tune, among other niceties like fixing browse for movies on premium channels, are added.
