Bad Intermittent lag / Packet loss

For the last few days I have been having major lag issues when playing online games.

I have tried all suggestions outlined here http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=7b00f640-ab9d-11df-f66c-000000000000

Setup:

OS: Win 7

Router: Linksys WRT54G

Modem: Motorola SB5101U

I also ran WinMTR for google.com w/the following results.

My biggest concern right away is the modem and router. Both of those devices are quite dated and not suitable for delivering the speeds you're currently subscribed to. I'd suggest upgrading the modem to a newer DOCSIS 3.0 model which will get you a free speed increase and consider moving on to a router that has gigabit Ethernet ports for the best experience possible.

Sounds like a good idea in general, but would that be accounting for the high packet loss I am getting?

This issue has only surfaced in the last 3 days.

Strange tracert, nytelock, you posted it's to google.com but the ip's are Amazon.  Also, you have 14% packet loss at hop 2, could that be your router?  I agree with Chris, both the modem & router are antiques as far as network equipment go.  The router is wireless g.

Actually may have been amazon, sorry about that.

Thanks for the additional insight, I went ahead and ordered a new router/modem so we'll see if that helps.

I am having the same issues. It's been for the past few days especially. Getting really high packet loss, especially when playing online games. I recently upgraded my modem and router right before this.

Do you have any trace routes showing where the loss is occurring so we may investigate further?
