AV receiver incompatibility with new cable box

I had built a little home theater system around my old style Cox cable box, which had been working flawlessly for years.Cox gave me a free upgrade to the current style box and it was not compatible with my recently upgraded AV receiver. The tech told me about frequent compatibility problems with receivers. Any thoughts would be appreciated

  • Hi, what is the compatibility issue? What model cable box do you have, and what mode/manufacturer is your AV receiver?

That's really a vague diagnosis from the tech.  Incompatible what...hardware, software, copyright protection?

We'll need makes and models of your A/V Receiver, cable-box and TV.  Your TV because if you're using its Audio Return Channel (ARC) to your A/V Receiver, your TV might not support anything above 2-channel stereo.

Most Cable and Satellite Boxes have a audio setting in the Menu related to PCM stereo or Dolby Digital output. Be sure to choose Dolby digital and check your receiver is set to this as well. Most modern receivers will auto detect the output.

Granted in my many years of setting up Audio Video systems for Home and Business I have never once run into a audio compatibility issue with Dolby Digital with cheap and expensive AV receivers and various brands including Sony, Kenwood, Onkyo, Pioneer, and even cheap all in one systems. I have run into some HDMI cables causing an issue and also bad Optics and Digital audio Cables as well.

I was issued the new rec6 box and it was hooked to my Sony STRDN 1086 receiver which worked fine with the old box. The new box was connected and the receiver began having problems processing the video signal. The box worked fine when hooked directly to the TV and the tech stated the problem was with my equipment. I asked for the old box to be reinstalled and the problems persist.Essentially, after being exposed to the Rec6 signal, the receiver appears permanently damaged. At this point I don' t know whether this is something that has occurred already and if it's likely to happen again. Before I invest in a new receiver, I'd like to get to the bottom of this

Unless the tech damage the HDMI connector, I don't know how an A/V signal would otherwise damage your receiver.  If the Rec6 now works with your TV, its signal and the HDMI cable are okay.

Does any other device work with your receiver, such as a Blu-ray or game console?  Did you or the tech change any setting on your receiver prior to connecting the Rec6, such as HDMI Signal Format or HDCP to 4K?  4K settings would either be "Enhanced" or "HDCP 2.2."  Any Error Messages from the receiver?

There is no video output from any source out of the receiver. Audio output is unchanged. The tech did not change any settings on the receiver. No error messages. The tech has had plenty of problems with these boxes and receivers and he stated " this box is not going to work with your receiver".

Sancho5, Have you tried using a different HDMI cord and or another HDMI port on your TV?

    I can't find a Sony STRDN 1086.  I found the STR-DN1080.

One solution was to reset your receiver to Sony's factory default settings:

Another solution:  "The output of the HDMI video signals of the receiver may be set to [HDMI OFF]. In this case, press HDMI OUT to set to [HDMI A], [HDMI B], or [HDMI A + B]."
