Auto marking checkbox

How do I change my email so that I don't have my top email or last email that I looked at automatically marked in the check box. It is causing emails to be deleted that I don't want deleted because I have to intentionally unmark it.

    I am also having this problem with the auto delete of the top email. So many problems with this new email that Cox does not seem to be able to fix!!!

    As soon as you select an email it checks the box. When you delete a message or messages the next item in the list is automatically selected. This can not be turned off. I suggest using the drag and drop feature to delete single emails.
