Adding TV to existing Internet... how to hook up?

I have a router that is directly connected to my cable... yet the instructions I got with my cable box want me to hook IT up to my cable. How do I do that and not lose my Internet?

It's called a cable splitter.  You want at least a bi-directional 1GHz unit with no more than -3.5 db at each output.  You can pick one up at a Cox store, Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, etc.  you will also need coax jumpers to go from the splitter output to the Cable box & modem.
