10 fast beeps when picking up receiver

I recently switched from POTS to Cox phone modem service. When I pick up the receiver on any phone in my home I get 10 fast dial tone beeps then a steady dial tone allowing me to make calls. I've been having intermittent problems with my phone service where the line goes dead mid-conservation. What do the beeps mean and are the 10 fast beeps an indicator of the problem, or is this just normal for this type of phone service?

    That sounds like it could be an indicator that you have voicemail waiting to be listened to. There is a stutter dialtone when first picking up the phone when you have a new voicemail.

    Thanks, Brian. That was the dial tone beeps I was getting. I don't have a need for voicemail so I didn't have it set up. Problem solved.
