Modem only has one Ethernet port

I can only have one device plugged into the modem at a time. Is it possible to get a modem with more than one port or use an Ethernet splitter? Or do I need to get a router?

Your modem will provide one IP address. You would want a router to provide multiple protected range IPs for multiple devices. A hub or splitter won't provide more IPs. I hope this helps explain. -Chris

@ChrisJ2 Does Cox have a list of compatible third party routers? They have gateways listed, is that the same thing?

Hello. Cox doesn't have a list of compatible routers. However, we do have a list of compatible third party modems, and modem/router combos. Here is a link to see the list, www.cox.com/residential/support/cox-certified-cable-modems.html.

Any decent router will work connected to your modem.

  1. Power down the modem.
  2. connect the ethernet from the modem to the uplink port on the router.
  3. connect any ethernet devices to router.
  4. power up the modem, wait for it to go online
  5. power up the router.
  6. Setup the router IAW the MFG directions.

I use a netgear RAXE300. It's a bit pricey, but an outstanding performer.
