Email Switch to Yahoo and Outlook

Unable to connect Outlook using POP or IMAP instructions for Yahoo Mail.  It appears Yahoo is not set up for Outlook to connect our Cox.net email accounts to their POP or IMAP servers (pop.mail.yahoo.com or imap.mail.yahoo.com).   Suspect the servers are rejecting anything that isn't a yahoo.com extension.  One would of thought Yahoo would have planned for this ahead of time for the Cox.net extensions.  When I was able to talk with a person, their suggestion was to wait 24 hrs. and try again.  i.e. trying too soon after the switch

The switch to Yahoo mail is anything but good.  Since switching, about half the time Yahoo is not available and/or takes repeated logins.  Yahoo's AI chat bot (AKA Help) is not set up to be much assistance to those with a Cox.net extension.  Yahoo wants you to pay for premium service to resolve all but the very basic issues.   Always referring you to a tutorial on Yahoo's help page.... which most have already looked at before starting a chat.

This looks promising... https://www.ubackup.com/articles/yahoo-mail-not-working-with-outlook365.html#:~:text=Why%20is%20Yahoo%20mail%20not,an%20app%20password%20for%20Outlook.

Haven't had a chance to try it yet... won't have time for that for a few hours.

There is also a video online somewhere of this, but using the password generated under 'security' and 'app' does work on the Macbook too. I entered 'mail' as the app I was using.

Just tried Don's suggestion (Pixel, Android, Outlook). Like other folks, this DID work and I did not have to change the port for SMTP. Thanks, Don!

Thanks for the information. I have not received the final go email as yet but I am expecting very soon. I have multiples accounts; and use PC Windows Outlook 2019 (suite) and pop3 as primary email client management app.

I have read your notes and look at the web site describing the use of password generator and entering that password in the Outlook email setup repair screens. two follow up questions:

1 Is establishing "If Two-step verification isn't turned on, you'll need to do that before you continue. Then select Generate app password. " necessary before generating password? since this seems to be a challenging stet up, I am trying to use a basic KISS principle (keep it simple) and avoid any additional program scripts or authentication processes to this already delicate setup process. Your thoughts?

2 As I mentioned (for PC Outlook 2019 Outlook Client app). I presume the other repair setup changes still need to be made pop, smtp, ports, and other check boxes. I ask because I am reading some threads and (as you know), there are multiple Outlook scenarios (versions) Outlook PC client 20xx, Outlook for Windows, New Outlook, Outlook 365 etc

Thanks

Can you look at these 3 screen shots to verify the appropriate changes?

Thanks

Screenshot 1 - I turned on "Require logon using SPA"

Screenshot 2 - I used POP3 port 995.

Screenshot 3 - Don't make any changes - looks good as-is.

I am having the same issue with Mail on my Macbook.  I've deleted, re-added, used the correct server settings, etc. - nothing works.  It says my account and the servers are 'offline'.  I had to use the Yahoo mail app, which I don't like as much as macmail.  If anyone has had success with this it would be much appreciated.

I have the same question.  Outlook assumes I want to connect to a cox server and not Yahoo because of my cox.net email address.  There seems to be no way to change this.  My apple devices do not have this problem however.

What if you use the yahoo mail app to login?  Enter username and password, then it will have you update your password. When I set mine up  thought it failed, but hours later it worked.

If you are on a pc, you can go into the control panel then mail and make changes to the server settings.  I tried two different email accounts, one IMAP the other a POP Cox account, but changing the server settings to the Yahoo servers didn't help.  I still would not connect.

OK I finally got it to work.  The key was to create a new account and manually enter the yahoo mail server settings.   I also had Yahoo create a one-time outlook app password.  I ended with an account called "myname.cox.net(1)"  but I can fix that.  Some of the suggestions I tried following were confusing because there are different variants of Outlook in use.  I have the enterprise version of Outlook 365.

Now I just have to merge my old .pst file so I can recover my old address book.

Thanks for sharing. I haven't received the go email form Cox yet but expecting very soon. I am running Outlook 2019 PC.  Yes, multiple variants has generated some confusion. I appreciate your experience and it may help me.

Can I presume that you did "not" activate two form authentication before or as part of this transition? I am trying to keep my transition process plan (for Outlook) as simple as possible, (no additional code scripts to confuse the Yahoo servers).

You mentioned you knew how to resolve the myname.cox.net(1); are you referring to removing the (1)? Can you share I have this situation as well.

Thanks

Richard

If you mean two-factor for Yahoo, yes I did.

Outlook added a (1) suffix automatically because I did not delete my original account first.

Same problem. I'm on a Pixel (latest Android, latest Outlook). I tried doing this in Gmail and it took seconds, but the Outlook setup won't take the ID and PW (and probably because of the cox.net and Yahoo.com difference).

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't receive the go email yet but I expect it soon. I use Outlook email client also. Cox Yahoo need to update their documentation to provide the details and correct asap. Tis is a real issue for many customers.

I hope the moderators are reading these updates and informating their management that they need to update their information asap.

Horrible.

I cannot link my new cox account with Yahoo to my Gmail account on my desktop. THis is my most annoying problem becasue I don't want to check 2 accounts.  I would appreciate any help on that front.

I could not get the Yahoo mail app to work on my android phone.   I did manage to get my cox mail through Gmail on my phone and tablet.  Both Android.  But I can't use Gmailify.

I was on the phone with Yahoo for 30 minutes but the person couldn't provide any advice on why the Yahoo app was not woriking.  Then we got cut off and she never called me back.

The ultimate solution is to switch all my cox mail to gmail but that is very hard since I have had my cox mail forever.

My email was switched last Friday but I am not able to get Outlook to work with the Yahoo settings. Just now I was able to get it to work with the Outlook app that comes with Windows 11.  During the setup I was able to select Yahoo as the provider, it only retrieved emails that were stored on the server just like an IMAP connection.  Before the transition I used Outlook setup with a pop server so I have a PST file with my old emails.  Hopefully at some point Yahoo will get the bugs worked out so it will work with the Outlook contained in an Office suite.

Thanks for sharing. I expect to receive the go email very soon. So to be clear.  I use Outlook 2019 windows desktop as my primary email application, filing filtering etc. And I expected to "simply" change existing pop, smtp, ports, encryption (as listed in yahoo doc). And new password (that I presume is necessary when you sign up for Yahoo web access). Does that sound like your process?

I am beginning to see recommendations that one needs to use the Yahoo password generator app; on their web site? Di you investigate that? Note that it still unclear to me if the Outlook setup should use the new password (setup during web phase of yahoo) or the new password that the app generator produces.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this?

Your are correct in that you use password generator in Yahoo for the password you enter into Outlook for with the server setting.  Not your Yahoo password you use to log into your account.  DonSheay posted a link that shows exactly what to do.

Note: there are two the outgoing mail server ports listed (465 & 587).  I and another have had "failure" with one and success with the other.  So is one doesn't work, use the other.

FYI - I use Office 2016 on a Windows 10 PC.  Outlook is part of the Office suite.

  1. Remove the cox.net account after initial set-up.
  2. Add the cox.net account back selecting "Show More"
  3. "Show More" allows you to set the server settings
I also could not find a way to change the server settings after the initial set-up.
Remove then Add back using "Show More"

I used the select provider option and Yahoo was there.

bryanibphx,

I'm running Windows 10 on a PC, the add/delete function looks a bit different than in your post.  However, changing the POP or IMAP server settings (manually or otherwise) to the posted instructions on Yahoo (pop.mail.yahoo.com/imap.mail.yahoo.com),, port etc.   I get the same message of unable to connect to incoming server.  As stated before, I believe it is an extension issue with yahoo.com and cox.net addresses.

I created the app password as mentioned in this article.  I am now connected and incoming emails are working.  The smtp end of it is still generating an error.

After creating the app password and getting the POP3 end of it working, I looked again at the smtp settings.  The instructions from Yahoo said to use either port 465 or port 587.  I was already pointing to 465 without luck, but changing it to 587 made it work.  I can now send and receive messages through outlook to/from the Yahoo account.  Not sure if this will help everyone, but good luck.

Thank you DonSeay for the link you found and provided.

After creating the app password per the instruction in the link provided by DonSeay, incoming connected but outgoing didn't as I switched to port 587.  When I switched back to port 465, outgoing connected and now I too am able to send and receive through Outlook to/from the Yahoo account.

Hats off to DonSeay for the link he found and provided.

DonSeay's instructions worked for me.  I'm using Windows 10 PC running Microsoft Office 2019 Outlook.   I did not have to delete any cox email accounts in Outlook to make the changeover.

I had to setup my Yahoo account first using the link provided in Cox's email indicating it was time to changeover.  I successfully did this, and all emails and file folders transferred to Yahoo and can be read in Yahoo's email web browser.

Then I opened Outlook on my PC.  I used the Outlook "repair" function, "advanced" settings on my xxxx@cox.net email account to get it to work.  I also didn't need to setup two factor authentication in Yahoo to generate an Outlook specific password link on Yahoo.

When Outlook successfully establishes its new connection to Yahoo servers, it starts using my old transferred email account and repopulates all previous files with their subfolders and emails.  This takes a couple of minutes.  It then began downloading all new "inbox" emails.  I did a test email to my Cox.net email account to check it worked and it does.  Working perfectly and seamlessly now.

Was your Outlook account using pop or imap settings?

New Contributor III

Use imap settings for incoming servers when resetting Outlook to work with Yahoo.  These are the servers which must be reset in Outlook.

Incoming:  imap.mail.yahoo.com

Outgoing:  smtp.mail.yahoo.com

I have tried these new settings along with the new Yahoo password, and it doesn't work. I have Outlook from Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021. I have also tried the "Repair" function in Outlook and also no luck.

Were you able to use Yahoo's Web Browser email client to see your email after you changed over?  If so, that means your changeover was successful.

We would then have to know at what point in the Outlook setup process it failed on you and what it said on your screen when it failed.

Yes, I was able to use Yahoo's Web Browser email client to see my email after I changed over.

After I entered my new password and the new IMAP settings, I hit the "Next" button. After a few seconds I get this message: "Something went wrong and Outlook couldn't save your account settings. Please try again."

Doesn’t work. Cox is a fail! Still cannot get my email on my phone along with my family members. Called, chatted, etc and they said they would not be able to help and multiple customers are experiencing issues. They dumped our Email other to yahoo ( a cheap free email service) and they cannot handle it! 😮 FAIL FAIL FAIL

This user forum is the only real Help function. Cox support and Yahoo (free) support is either not available or is useless.  The pain of switching to new email addresses has been what has previously kept me from leaving Cox "services". In the coming weeks it looks like I won't have to change my email address if I leave Cox. It might be time to spend my money elsewhere.  Sad!

Someone please fill me in on what is going on.  My cox email disappeared 2 days ago.  Cannot receive anything on my iPhone or MacBook.  I'm reading through all these "Yahoo" discussions, but I do not have Yahoo.  So is my problem different?  I am in the dark here!  HELP please!😩

Okay, I figured it all out. But first a suggestion when giving directions, be specific with names and titles, do not use "it" or "that" or assume anything. All "Click" references are left-clicks with the mouse.

First, go to Yahoo mail, to your former Cox.net account. Put your cursor on your name and/or picture in the right top corner. Click "Manage Your Account." Click on the Security Tab. In the box labeled, "Other ways to sign in", click "Generate and manage app passwords". Type in "Outlook" in the "App name" line. Click "Generate password". Copy that password. Don't worry about the spaces in the password, they do not convey when pasting.

Next go to Outlook. Click the File tab, click Account Settings box, click "Account Settings". Click "New". Type in your old Cox email address, click "Advanced options". Check-mark "Let me set up my account manually".  Click "Connect". Click "POP" or whatever method you want to use. (I personally use POP so I will explain that version but what I explain should carry over to the other set ups.)   Now the password screen appears. Paste the app password in the box. Click "Connect". Wait for the setup to "fail" when you are presented with the credentials box to log in. Click "Cancel". Click "Change Account Settings". Now change the Incoming Server to "pop.mail.yahoo.com" and the Outgoing Server to "smtp.mail.yahoo.com". Click "Next". You are presented with the password screen (again) that is prefilled, click "Connect". You should get a successful message.

Great work.  I struggled with how to get that done within the original email account in Outlook.  I know someone that called Yahoo tech support and they remoted in and made changes in the original email account so it would work, after waiting on hold for over 90 minutes.

I forgot one thing. When Outlook creates a new account, the location of the outlook.pst data file this creates may be in your "Documents/Outlook Files" folder. But my current Outlook.pst file is in the "<username>/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook" folder. So I had to change the Outlook data file location where the "New" Cox email account looks to find it.

So what you do is when you are in the window/box where you change the Incoming and Outgoing servers to Yahoo, at the bottom of the box is where you select "Use an existing data file," then browse to find your existing Outlook.pst data file.
