Imap changes (such as deleting an email) will then delete it for you automatically on any other devices you access that account from (such as thunderbird, android phone, and web mail) it syncs it across all. Pop (pop3) only impacts that one inbox, so for instance if you setup an email account in thunderbird using pop, and delete an email, it won't delete it from the site nor sync it across multiple devices. MOST good email providers give you the option of imap or pop, cox on the other hand, does NOT allow imap setup and you can't use it. Why? Because it would cost them more money on their end to support that protocol, even though it's far more convenient for customers. smtp just stands for sending mail, be it pop or imap it's the same. It's a secure method to send email. Okay the following instructions are going to assume you are setting up a cox email account, though I would strongly suggest considering getting a gmail or yahoo, they allow imap setup so you can sync across multiple places and devices. Download, install thunderbird, open the program. Click "file", "new" then "existing email account" <---since you already have a registered email account On pop up window it'll ask for your name (which will show to people you're sending mail to), your email address & your password. Click continue once you fill it out. For instance: name: John Doe email: FakeJohnDoe@cox.net password: fakepassword [click continue] Thunderbird scans for the server files for you automatically (such as the pop, imap, and smtp settings) and fills it in automatically, may take up to a minute to scan at most. It should find the right settings for you, so the next part of this step you can probably skip over unless it doesnt give them. If not, click the "manual config". Make sure your name, email, password are still filled in the boxes at top. In the lower portion for "incoming" select "pop3", in the white box next to it type without quotes "pop.cox.net" select port 995 (it should then auto select ssl/tls). Now for outgoing type smtp.cox.net and select auto. click "done" On left side of thunderbird, notice you will have your account now. vuala :). you can create email, send, create offline folders to store etc. That's how to setup a basic email account. If you do the same with gmail or yahoo, be sure to go into your "settings" or options in the email account itself on website to enable imap, much better for syncing. Yes you keep same email. I use my domain email, gmail, yahoo, hotmail and cox all through thunderbird rather than logging into each site separately. As far as contacts, I dont think cox has an export option to save your contacts directly, though if you were using gmail or yahoo or pretty much any other service, you can "export" them to what's called csv format (basically excel file separating everything) and then import it to thunderbird. In your case, might just add to the address book of thunderbird, then you can from that point on save and export. If you have more than 1 email account, you can use all the contacts across them all. Just be sure if you have more than 1 account you look at the top of the new email window it'll have a drop down showing you which account you are using to send from (can use it to select different account too). Also if you have your "yourname@cox.net" email folder clicked on in thunderbird then click new mail, it'll by default start an email from that address; same as if you have your yourname@yahoo.com clicked instead, it'll create an email from that email address. No, I don't see any downside to thunderbird, its far more secure than using the cox ** and no advertisements! You also have the ability to create "local" folders, to store your email in, then back up to actual files, so if you switch to a new computer or such, you don't lose all your information.I use it for all my email addresses and use imap where i can (to sync with my android phone). It's nice to have ability to make local folders, such as "family" "business" "bills" and then store information in those. In addition, you can set your own junk mail preferences and it learns as you mark junkmail as junk and not as junk. <---that's an entirely different discussion though. For the typical user, you'll find the above instructions suffice and make it a lot easier for managing multiple email accounts :). Enjoy! It's kind of a learned thing, it's hard to explain a ton without you actually using it. You kind of learn quick as you use it.Lemme know if that's sufficient for now? Btw, if you have any questions about what I've said, just ask, hopefully won't miss the email notification but tag it @mat at the beginning so it gets my attention. ty Re: McAfee Security Suite Epic Fail Don't waste your money on anti virus. MOST times its malware and spyware that will impact you, get ahold of malwarebytes, its' free, just do a weekly scan. As far as norton and mcaffee are concerned, they aren't big league AV anymore and haven't been for years. If you are going to get a virus it's most likely going to be hieuristic anyways and the antivirus won't help. It only gives you a false sense of security. I mean, you're basically putting a bandaid on a big gaping wound. Aside from that, mcaffee and norton play *** with your computer. They use far more system memory than they should whereby bogging down the computer and causing conflicts on multiple levels with software. My suggestions is just pick up a freeby type like AVG, kaspersky, or even microsoft essentials which has a much smaller footprint on your computer. Aside from that, pick up malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/) it's a well-written piece of software for detecting minor virus threads but primarily malware and spyware. Most people misdiagnose their problem as a virus when realistically it's malware impacting them. If you don't like mcaffee slowing your computer down, you're going to hate norton as it does the same exact thing. Heck, I'd get bit defender before I put norton on the computer. If you ever have an issue, norton buries itself so deeply in your registry and your computer it never really goes away upon removal. Re: Re: Our Apologies I second the notion that as important as it is to inform users of a major issue like this, wasn't that the intention of having a big 'ol red link next to the login for webmail? Doesn't that service the purpose without forcefully injecting a js popup? Re: additional e-mail accounts You don't have to make them an authorized user on the account as far as I'm aware. Last I recall setting one up it's go to cox.net, sign in, click your internet tools, then email, then click add new email address. Realistically though, go create a gmail or yahoo account, it's free, avoids all the downtime drama of the email lately and you don't have to deal with any of the issues with isp email nor the account information being shared. Re: Trying real hard to use Enhanced Webmail Get rid of using web mail. It's much easier to just user "thunderbird" or "windows mail/live mail" to access your stuff each time you need. Rather than logging in each time stuck using their interface, using their setup, get thunderbird or windows live mail and do it on your own. Also have the ability to backup your mail, contacts, store offline etc. If I had a choice, I'd use thunderbird, it's simple, easy, lots of security features and it's free (open source software). Each time you check your mail do you see those ads at the top? Each time you open a page each ad is an impression whereby generating revenue for cox based on you opening your email. Heck, it's simple as anything to setup, if you want instructions let me know. Re: Data Usage I don't think it's about screwing people, it's about the lack of competition. No competition and the isp can do as they please. Look at foreign countries, they offer much higher bandwidth caps & faster speeds at lower costs (in many cases) than what we get here in the us. It's about the competition; until enough people say "enough is enough" or there is competition to prove elsewise, you have to follow what is being set as rules. Consider this, if you're on the premier 30mb line with 250gb month/bandwidth paying about $65/month you're overpaying. keep in mind bandwidth only costs them pennies per gb, this isn't opinion, it's fact. So let's say you're paying 2cents per gb traffic for 250gb traffic. Thats a backend cost of $5 IF you use all 250gb of traffic, otherwise that cost of bandwidth they didn't allocate to you becomes pure profit. Keep in mind they say they're upgrading networks etc and it costs a lot. That's true, Look at the higher & higher caps on internet speeds and the cost per mb/s goes down. What this basically means is we are paying more than we should, BUT aside from the pure profit, some of that probably does go into extra network infrastructure, which means further down the line reduced overall costs per the amount of bandwidth and actual speed we get. Think of it this way, it's a control factor. Would you truly want 100% of people able to download unlimited or use their bandwidth in an unlimited fashion? A person could download 10 terabytes (10,000gb) of data and pay the same as someone who barely does any web surfing and let's say uses 30gb. There would be no reprecussions and no way for the isp to say "hey, that's too much load on our network" to limit it. In this case they set that control factor so they have the ability to legally limit everyone and keep a control factor in place. Hopefully this all makes sense and better explains it. I don't personally think bandwidth caps are necessary nor fair, but then again I think the caps should be higher (at the very least) to help deter the fact that our internet speeds are getting faster, the servers offering the speed and connecting us are faster, therefore we consume more bandwidth. If that bandwidth doesn't increase you go over much easier. Consider if you're an avid netflix streaming fan, you can easily blow through that 250gb in a month JUST on netflix if between your family you watch a few movies a day. Just food for thought. I'd be happy with caps that were about 2.5x what they are now. It would better represent actual usage versus speed of the line. Re: Cox Webmail and IE I'm not here to support cox and say they're demi-gods but state the facts. On a side note, if one browser is able to access the website fine and the other isn't, this is a browser related issue and something on your end, not on the service provided. Whatever you may have going on with them outside of this isn't my business, but for the browser follow my previous post and you should be fine, or switch off IE. Cupcake said: CHRIS - Me again - CUPCAKE - I'm trying very hard, not to DUMP COX; but every day it's the same old issue....., and my perception of COX, is they JUST DON'T GIVE A CARE......wanted to use more explicit. :>( CHRIS - was told by a friend who also has COX Email, that I should not being using COX WEBMAIL, as that is an option used for TRAVELERS..... ???? I didn't understand her comment, nor did I know that COX had anything but COX WEBMAIL. DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A DIFFERENC. Anyway, CHRIS - still having the same daily issue: "THIS PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED" ..... ????? :>( Very UNHAPPY - Re: Cox Webmail and IE First of all, drop internet explorer, it's a terrible browser that reads web code incorrectly. Even up to the newest IE10, is NOT on par with chrome or firefox. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact. Second, if you are heck bent on using internet explorer & prefer your web code to be read incorrectly, or you prefer to support microsoft and use their backwards browser that's been holding been web standards for years then reinstall internet explorer. To reinstall/reset it do the following: Open internet explorer Click "tools" at top, then "internet options", you will get a window that opens On this window click the "advanced" tab. About half way down that tab you should see a button that says "reset". Click it. Suggestions include deleting the personal info also (the checkbox) to default everything without having to uninstall, reinstall, download the program. My suggestion is really to switch off internet explorer, it is a terrible browser that isn't written to web standards, it's designed to microsofts view of what web standards are. Anyways, let me know if this fixes your issue if you are planning to stay on the insecure and faulty web browser. Re: McAfee and Cox Security Suite Download Don't waste your time with mcaffee, it's awful virus protection. It was once a decent piece of software years ago, but not now. Just because it's "free" doesn't mean it's any good. Re: Creating a web page on the COX user data storage server. So go on wordpress or freewebs and have a free website setup. It's extremely basic with lots of limitations but you can do the basic site with that. If you want an actual site, buy hosting, don't rely on the free stuff isp's used to offer.
