ContributionsMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsCOX read all the dissatisfied customers within this forum. Dear COX, Just read all the complaints in the phone forum, what a mess. And you want me to upgrade my phone! The phone from 1876 dead, now it's ** VOIP Dear COX, Do you realize that your new and improved VOIP service is not wanted, nor does it work? The traditional copper telephone line is king, as it doesn't require a modem, coaxial cables, electricity, electronic waste, backup batteries, mac addresses, IP addresses, and the like. The telephone in it's current state has been in use since roughly 1876, some 142 years ago and has worked without issues until now. When you need 911 on copper you get it and they know where you live and how to get there. VOIP, 911 needs you to tell them where you are while you are in an emergency. Not to mention, if the power goes out, your VOIP dies after a few hours if you don't purchase a backup battery. Talk about e-waste... your equipment will now require firmware updates, security updates, reboots, reinstalls, replacements, etc, etc, etc,. And at the end of the day, if the modem doesn't work, you sure as heck cannot call COX for support, as the phone doesn't work. I am just at a loss here, don't understand that I need all the below to operate a phone: 1. Phone Modem 2. Coaxial cable from modem to wall 3. Electrical cable from phone modem to electrical outlet 4. Phone cable from phone modem to wall to power all jacks in the house Re: Must install a modem for basic phone service Well, this was my response to the same issue: COX, I need clarity please? What does this “most advanced phone equipment available” do? Does it do more than make phone calls? My current phone does not require electricity, a coaxial connection or a modem that connects to the wires in my home, so how is this improved and more advanced? Per the COX telephone representative, 911 will not know my location…huh!!!! That takes about 10 steps back. My current system, 911 knows exactly where I live. The new advanced system will only work for 4-8 hours during a power outage? Huhh, what, my current system will work for years during a power outage. How can this be advanced. The new advanced system requires a backup battery, yet you are going to charge for that, yet, I don’t need a backup battery today… Say What! The new advanced system uses a modem that will eventually require firmware updates, prone to hacking, has an IP address, etc, etc. How is this advanced…. This is a telephone, it’s just a phone, so why all this extra equipment to run a phone. Lastly, a few weeks back the COX network to include cable, VIOP and internet were down for hours, what do you do now? You cannot make a phone call to 911 if you need help? My current copper phone line system worked during that outage, and you call this “advanced”. Clarity please, as this makes no sense to me. Re: Cox to eliminate traditional copper phone and replace with VOIP.. BAD NEWS Just visited the COX Store to look at the equipment required, picture below... this is a behemoth and when they install, it must be in close proximity to a cable coax line, electrical outlet and a phone jack for the inside wiring in your home. Now I don't know about you, I don't have this combination unless this big ugly box is going to sit on the floor in my living room! Well, I don't want this additional piece of equipment and all the wires, etc. This is just wrong at every level. And, and, this is just more equipment that can go bad and go bad at the wrong time. Re: Cox to eliminate traditional copper phone and replace with VOIP.. BAD NEWS Found this document on COX.com under phone service, I have highlighted a few interesting items. Additional jacks, inside wiring, reconnection, activation, taxes, franchise fees, and surcharges are additional. Regular rates apply after promotional period, if any. Cox phone service provides high quality voice connection to residential customers in Cox's service area (1). Telephone modem required and will be provided for the duration of phone service subscription. Upon disconnection of phone service, modem must be returned within 30 days or a monthly rental fee or lost equipment charge will apply. Modem uses household electrical power to operate. Telephone service, including access to e911 service, will not be available during a power outage without a battery or if the modem is moved or inoperable (2). New modem installs do not come with a battery. You may purchase a battery from Cox or, if you are a Lifeline customer, obtain a battery from Cox without charge. You must monitor and replace the battery as needed (see cox.com/battery ). Other restrictions may apply. Telephone service provided by an affiliated Cox entity (3). Service may require credit approval. Deposit may be required. (1) Is the call quality reduced if you call outside a COX area? (2) Traditional POTS lines (e.g., copper) operate when the power goes out. (3) What does this mean, it’s no longer COX? A credit check might be required? What? More LOST revenue COX KILLS phone Well, I guess my landline phone days are over and even more lost revenue for COX. I pay $50 a month for a traditional landline, and now my copper line is being ripped out and now I need a modem to make a phone call.... REALLY... I now need a phone modem to make a phone call??????? versus just, oh, plugging in a phone into the jack on the wall! Re: Battery for Cable Telephone Modem So sorry to hear that you need to purchase a backup battery for a telephone! If COX kept the original landline, you would not need a battery! Re: Upgraded Digital Phone Modem. Now getting static on phone And adding, you now need a modem to make a phone call! Re: Upgraded Digital Phone Modem. Now getting static on phone This is the problem with VOIP... it's ** COX is ripping and tearing out traditional copper phone lines that work flawlessly for over a century for this @#$$%! Re: Cox to eliminate traditional copper phone and replace with VOIP.. BAD NEWS Danny, I appreciate your reply, however, my current phone doesn't need a backup battery, it's running on copper. The electricity runs through the copper provided by the phone company. So when the power goes out, the phone still works. The current technology works and doesn't require a modem, so why change it? All this added equipment to operate a phone that is over 100 years old is beyond me. It's not broke! If COX really wanted to add features, stop all the ROBO calls, this I would pay for... not VOIP.
