My Contour 2 box hard drive is humming rather loudly, which cannot be a good sign. If it needs to be swapped for a new one, is there any way to save all the recorded programs?
In short; no.
I think the box bonds to a specific hard drive(HD) by the HD's serial number or some other identifier. It is also encrypted, so even if you could take the HD out, there is no way to copy it. That said, you could make a analog copy using a video output from the box to a external recorder, but that would need to be done in real time. The old Contour had eSATA, so you could use your own HD, but even then, the drives are configured in RAID, so if you change boxes, you have to reformat the drive.
Thanks. Wasn't the answer I was hoping for but I understand the complexity of trying to do this.
I would still wait for a answer from a moderator, or someone else who specialize in TV service. Are you sure it's the HD making the noise, and not the case fan or a fan on the HD? I heard the new cases get hotter, so make sure there is proper ventaltion and see if anyone knows how to get into the diagnostic to get a temp. check. I think Cox can even tell if there is a temp. warning remotely.

Hmmm? I understand the temperature outside the box would vary, but the operating temp. of each model box should be the same. I thought there was a heat sensor feature in Home cert. but maybe I am wrong. Try cooling it down and see if the hum goes away before swapping it out.
