Are some of the broadcast and cable networks broadcasting in 1080p? If so, does Cox maintain a list of the 1080p channels?
We do not currently offer channels in 1080p.

That's what I thought: no television station broadcasts in 1080p. However, here's my confusion: one employee says programming is 1080p and another says it's not 1080p.
BACKGROUND. I went to a Cox Solution Store to replace my worn remote. While at the counter, I noticed the picture on their TV was very detailed...more than mine at home...but I assumed it was an engineered HD display loop. You know...like they have in the stores to make the TV sets look better. However, it was a commercial on ABC for adult diapers.
The rep assured me the resolution was 1080p. How can that be? I didn't think the networks broadcast in 1080p. We were both stumped so he navigated through the channel info...on the box...and confirmed 1080p60. Why don't I get 1080p at home? I only get 1080p through my Roku. He looked up my account and said it's because I have an older box. Maybe, but he couldn't explain what my older box was incapable of doing.
If the networks are not originating 1080p content, why was the picture at the Solution Store so detailed? Something is deinterlacing 1080i or scaling 720p to 1080p. It's either at the head-end or within the set-top box. I suspect it's the box because contributors have mentioned the 1080p setting on their Contour 2; however, I never gave that any credence because networks don't originate 1080p content.
Are the Contour 2 boxes deinterlacing or scaling content to 1080p? If so, why doesn't my Rovi do that? I have zero interest in DVR service so am I relegated to mid-rez content?
Since the Motorola DCX3200, cable boxes have been capable of connecting at 1080p. Probably using a upscaling box at the store though. That, and and a 4K TV can still make the picture look better. Picture quality isn't JUST resolution, but a mixture of many things; refresh, contrast, color saturation, light output, etc.
Do you have a 1080p STB? If so, how is it handling deinterlacing? How does your image look? Does it look natural?
I understand UHD sets, upscalers and ad hoc color-settings can make the picture "look better" but those proprietary enhancements never looked natural to me. The image in the Solution Store didn't look natural because its color wasn't accurate and its brightness appeared to be set on white phosphorus...but it was more detailed. It was a TV commercial at 1080p. I was just wondering what was deinterlacing or scaling Cox programming.
It appears, according to you, Contour 2 is doing it.
Thanks for clarifying. I didn't know Contour 2 could upscale and is available without DVR. I'll miss my Rovi.

Can Contour 2 hardware use the "Native" video output format? Meaning if Cox is broadcasting a certain channel at 720, it will output it at 720, and if 1080, it will output at 1080. IMO up-scaling and aspect should be done by the TV, not the cable box. I noticed it was lost from ROVI to Contour 1. Any chance it might come back?
I agree: there are better chipsets in TVs and streamers. I don't believe a user guide ever existed to explain this stuff. What I've understood from previous discussions is C2 only has 2 video settings: 1080p and 720p. There is no native setting.I'd keep Rovi if my TV could deinterlace and upscale.
