In the last 25 hours, my phone has called itself. I was wondering who kept calling me. Went to Call History and saw it's my own phone number calling itself. What the f^^k Cox?
I'm having the same issue - It's a scammer claiming to be a Microsoft representative. The caller ID is MY land-line number so I can't block it (...or CAN I?)
Locally, yes. Why would you ever call yourself?

Bruce, I feel like your interpretation of what I said didn't sync up with my intended meaning. My comments were a description of what I tested with my phone and an assessment of what I observed. When I said calling my own number gets my voice mail messages and entering *298 does the same thing, it was to inform anyone who might not already know, that entering *298 gets the same results as keying in the phone number, i.e. voice mail messages. (Other voice mail options are also available). I didn't say, imply or in any way intend to convey the notion that keying *298 into a phone will initiate a phone call.
Accessing voice mail by calling my own number on my own phone isn't anything new because it worked the same way on the old platform. The one thing I noticed that is different is that calls to my own number were logged in "Voice Tools" call history on the old platform, but are not logged in the new one.
Calling my own Cox phone number from my own Cox phone does not get a busy signal.
Bruce, have you tried calling your own Cox phone number from your own Cox phone recently?
Other Cox phone customers, do you get a busy signal when you call your own Cox phone number from your own Cox phone? (There may be something easier to test than this, but nothing comes to mind at the moment). Please test it and post back. If you don't mind, please indicate whether you have voice mail turned on. Thanks.
Bruce, I wouldn't necessarily interpret not being able to block your own phone number with Selective Call Rejection as a discrepancy. Cox may have done that intentionally so that customers don't inadvertently disable the ability to access their voice mail. However, before accessing voice mail, Cox must determine that the phone number entered is the customer's own number and verify that it was entered from the customer's own phone. So, if they're able to do that, theoretically, Cox should be able to identify when the sending number is the customer's number, determine when the call was not originated from the customer's phone and block it by default. That would prevent scammers from being able to spoof the phone number of the call recipient. Maybe someone at Cox could consider queueing this up for evaluation and if deemed to be an accurate assessment, move it through their program change process.
This is an interesting set of postings. I have not had this Spam, but have heard others receiving this.
CurtB, I tried calling my own COX phone using my handset. I get a message "for US English, press 1" but don't get any Busy signal....like something I remember from the past. Not sure where the message was going to go...I entered 1, but left after that.
I find that under Voice Tools/Call History, there is a Voice Mail. This is using COX, and not the Voice Mail recording that my landline uses to the phone directly. Looking at the timestamps, I'm guessing that the COX Voice mail receives messages when I'm on the phone talking. Since my phone is busy, people cannot leave a voice mail to it, and maybe it rolls over to the COX voice mail. Not sure if this is the correct conclusion
Voice Mail and your answering machine are not connected in any way. Meaning, if you're on the phone, a Missed caller can't leave a message on your answering machine. Instead, they'd only get a busy signal...even if you hung up during their busy signal...they still wouldn't be able to leave a message.
You have to specifically enable Voice Mail before it would do anything. That's an interesting scenario, however, about the Missed caller, busy signal and Voice Mail. I wonder if a busy signal disables it? Probably not. It's probably why they invented Voice Mail in the first place.
If you have Voice Mail enabled and are not home, whichever device (answering machine or Voice Mail) goes off-hook first would take the message. For example, if Voice Mail is configured to pick-up after 4 rings but your answering machine is configure for 2 rings, you'd probably never get a Voice Mail...unless it's the missed call in the interesting scenario above.
Bruce, I checked my Voice tools/settings/voiceMail and see that the the pickup is set to 5. My phone's ring pickup is set to 4. This has been for a long time so I don't know why I see entries in my Cox Voice mail. What is interesting is that all 3 are from outsiders, one being a Phone call block (not a *60 entry).
I have Cox voice mail (don't know why since I have phone voice mail) and Cox call waiting enabled.
As to the issue of My phone # calling me Spam, I do not know how to Stop. Until I get one, will not worry but hope to see some useful thoughts on this subject for future use.
Why the message about "US English, press 1" message when dialing my number from my own handset....well don't know where that would have taken me if I had continued.
Cox Voice Mail picking up first...although it's set to longer than your answering machine...might be a time/distance thing. I'm just assuming.
The incoming call is connected at the Cox Voice Gateway. Cox Voice Mail also resides at the Gateway. Perhaps by the time the Gateway receives the off-hook signal from your answering machine, the 5th ring already occurred so Cox Voice Mail just kicks in. Again, just assuming.
I don't understand your "...one being a Phone call block (not a *60 entry)..." statement. Is *60 Selective Call Rejection? If you didn't block the call, what did? Do you also subscribe to Nomo? Nomo blocking a call is the same as going off-hook.
Whatever device or feature goes off-hook first (telephone, answering machine, call blocker, fax, Nomo, SCR, Voice Mail, etc), that device controls the call. If Nomo kicks in first, all other devices stop ringing or stand-down.
As far as future-proofing spam calls from your own telephone number, you'd think Cox would allow you to add your own number to SCR and not count against your limit of 30 numbers. At least it should be an option under Phone Tools. I say "option" because I have a call-blocker and want to get my money's worth by Cox not blocking anything.
Thanks Bruce for your replies. I apparently use 2 call blocks...the 30 from COX (when using *60), and the 250 that is available on my Panasonic phone (has a button block feature).
Looking at my Cox call history, I see that the 3 messages that appeared in its Log, came from numbers outside my Cox address. All the entries that appear in the Cox history log, associate with numbers I have stored in the Cox address book, and not from my Phone hardware address book (as expected).
What is curious is that the 3 Cox Voice messages appeared when I was on the phone talking to someone. I'm going to have to pay attention to this history stuff. I'm also sure there are many users out there that have not looked at Voice Tools or their History and may not realize the Cox Voice mail is on/off..... thanks, sorry for digressing from the main topic.
