Can I have more than one phone?
I have the one phone/answering machine hooked up to the modem, it has multiple handsets, why won't the handsets work and or is there a way to have a phone working thats not hooked up to the modem?

Do the handsets connect to a phone jack in the wall along with the power source or do they just connect to the power?

Sounds like you have the main phone connected to the telephony modem and the satellite handsets connected to a power source. Unless the satellite phones have a port located on them that requires a telephone cord connection, then your current set-up should work with all phones connected.
If you have handsets that require a telephone cord connection to a phone jack attached to the wall, they will not work unless you activate those telephone jacks.
do the handsets turn on/get power? batteries might be low or dead
